Gladys Futami Trent

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Zenichiro and Toyo Yamasaki; her oldest and youngest sisters Florence Nakashima and Jean Yamasaki; her brothers Robert, Victor and Munemitsu; and her husbands Richard Shiro Konno and Goodwin “Buzzy” Trent.

As a single mom to a toddler, she returned to her family home with her mom and 3 youngest siblings. She worked full time, sewed most of our clothes, took the bus, took me to preschooi; the public library, Keiki Fun Program at the Kaimuki Theater, Local Parades, and Hula & Swim Lessons. Mom also went grocery shopping, cooked our meals, cleaned the house, did our weekly laundry and ironing, mowed the lawn with a push mower, cared for our beautiful flower beds and shrubs — plus more. Makes me wonder how she did it all!

She was also frugal and smart. Planned & saved enough to travel — and took tours to Japan, Southeast Asia, Canada, Parts of the USA, Mexico, Central & South America and Europe, I think almost throughout the world — except for the African Safari that she had no desire to experience.

Mom remarried in 1989 to “Buzzy” Trent, and had a happy life. After he died, she continued her active life, walking to the park, doing Tai Chi, walking to the grocery stores, cooking, taking care of herself and her plants. She even did a tandem jump out of a plane for her ‘80th — or was it her 85th birthday!

Regardless, she was true to herself and I thank our Lord for giving me my mom as long as he did. 99 years seem long but yet still not long enough…. Thank you Jesus!

We will celebrate her life Thursday, 3 Sep2026 at Borthwick Mortuary, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Ocean scattering to follow at 5pm the same day!
