John William Schutte (Willy) was born to George and Susan Schutte in Honolulu, Hawai'i. He is the youngest of five children, Mary, Georgina, Susanne, and George. John's first love was to Judith Schutte, survived by his three daughters Lynn, Lukika, and Robin. He is blessed to have ten grandchildren, Kasen, Kamakana, Tatianna, Kaneakauhi, Antonia, Mysun, Manaia, Ioane, Ni'o, Tavao, and six great grandchildren, Keao, Kamakani, Kayden, Kawehi, Kaia, and Kaliko. Able to find love again, John remarried to Patricia Schutte, adding to the family four sons George, Anthony, Jerry, and James, and a daughter, Lani. He is blessed to have four more grandchildren, Noelani, Nainoa, La'akea, Kiana, and one great grandchild, Kaimana. With the loss of Patricia, John found love and companionship with his current lady friend, Linda Lacaden, who cared for him in his last months of life.
In his early years of adulthood, he enlisted in the army as a mechanic for three years, with deployment to the Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. With the opportunity of on-site experience, he started his career in construction. His structured work life and the drive to be a leader paved his way of many years in construction with Fletcher Pacific and Dick Pacific Construction, eventually climbing his way up as superintendent.
In his spare time, John loved to fish, work on his cars, ride his "toys" (Hot rod, corvette, Fat Boy), and be "Mr. Fix It" around the house. After retirement, he found his passion of making and selling prune mui, a family recipe. He enjoyed crafting his variety of products, attending many craft fairs and pop-up tents around the island, and designing ways to improve and expand his business. John has passed his love of "Kinipopo's Mui" to the family to carry on the Schutte legacy.
In life, John emphasized self-sufficiency and determination. One of his memorable sayings was "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". John will be profoundly missed by his family, colleagues, friends, and dog Kai. He will be forever missed and never forgotten.
