

She was preceded in death by her parents, Minoru Tagomori and Momoyo Tagomori (née Iwami); her sister, Yukiko “June” Kunitake, and brothers, Mitsugi Tagomori, Hiromu Tagomori, Tsuyoshi Tagomori, and Manabu Tagomori; and her husband, Teruo Tabata.
Marilyn was born in Wailuku, Maui on February 20, 1930. She attended grammar school at Kahului School and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1948. She was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from the University of Hawaiʻi with a Bachelor of Arts in 1952.
She married Teruo Tabata in 1955 at Kahului Union Church before completing her studies and her Professional Elementary Certificate (to teach elementary school) in 1958.
Throughout her training and career she taught around the islands including on Molokai and at Kamehameha III Elementary, Wilcox Elementary, Kapaʻa Elementary, ʻEleʻele Elementary, Māʻili Elementary, and Kanoelani Elementary. During that time she raised her three children and supported Teruo in his career in factory operations at American Factors, which took the family to live in Lahaina, Maui; Kapaʻa, Līhuʻe and Kekaha on Kauaʻi; and Waipahu and ʻAiea on Oʻahu.
After retiring in 1985 she spent her life caring for grandchildren and her husband and taking up interests and hobbies, including landscape oil painting, the healing practice Jin Shin Jyutsu, gardening, attending ʻukulele and tai chi classes, walking in the park, corresponding with friends, and traveling and visiting family. She was a member of the Waipahu United Church of Christ.
Marilyn is survived by her sons and daughter and their spouses, Lyle and Vianne Tabata of Līhuʻe, Allyn Tabata and Alan Amos of Mililani, and Curtis and Ruby Tabata of ʻAiea; as well as her grandchildren and their spouses, Benson and Meddie Tabata, Mikio Tabata, Michael Tabata, Kelsey Amos and Jordan Fahmie, Tsuyuno Amos and Dustin Roggenburg, and Jin-Hyung and Min-Jeong Jung; and her great-grandchildren, Emily Tabata, Marco Fahmie, Carlo Fahmie and Yoona Jung.
A memorial service will be held at 10am, with a preceding visitation at 9am, on August 1, 2026 at Waipahu United Church of Christ. The family respectfully requests no flowers or koden (condolence offerings).
