Aunty Mary "Malia" Kaipo Malama Serrao, 78, of Ewa Beach, HI, passed away on August 14, 2013 at home in Ewa Beach.

Funeral services will be held 10:00am (viewing) and 11:30am (service), Friday August 30, 2013 at Borthwick Mortuary, Maunakea Chapel with the Father Ronie Pillos of Saint John Apostle and Evangelist Church, officiating. Ashes to be scattered at a later date.

Aunty Mary was born in Waimea, Kaua'i to Josephine Malama on September 2, 1934. She went to school in Honolulu at McKinley High School and Cannons School of Business. She married Albert E. Serrao on May 25, 1957 in Honolulu at Saint Theresa Church . She worked as a Procurement Clerk for the federal government. She was involved in the Hoakalei Cultural Foundation, Pu'uloa Outrigger Canoe Club, Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association, Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association, International Va'a Federation, Na 'Opio Canoe Racing Association, Oahu Interscholastic Association, Barbers Point Federal Credit Union, Hawaii Central Credit Union, (Ewa) Pu'uloa Hawaiian Civic Club, Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, and Ewa Beach Community Association.

Aunty Mary is preceded in death by husband Albert E. "Sonny" Serrao, sisters; Madeline "Maddy" Richards, Katheen "Leialoha" Leleo, brothers; George K. Malama and Everett "Buddy" Malama,

Aunty Mary is survived by sons; Lawrence "Kala" Serrao, and Steven "Kakela" Serrao (Loreen "Lori" Serrao), daughter Marleen "Kau'i" Serrao, sister May Malama Parages, Grandchildren; Dayna "Pualani" Serrao, Steven "Steve" Among-Serrao, Michael "Mike" Among-Serrao, Scott "Pomai" Among-Serrao, and Cindy "Iwalani" Among-Serrao, Great-Grandchildren; Mika Lin Detjen, Makena Among-Serrao, and Makela Among-Serrao.

The Serrao Family, HCRA - OCRA - and the whole Va'a/Wa'a Ohana is sad to announce tne lost of one of the Pioneer of the va'a in Hawaii and in IVF.
Indeed she was for a very long time the race Director for IVF World Sprints and Molokai Hoe.
A strong lady, sevère, but just. Always following the rules and make sure that those rules are followed by all participants.
Let's ALL have a minute of silence in memory of OUR GREAT AUNTY MARY.
