Aloha e Cousin Ivy and the Bento/Chamizo ʻohana,

My memories of your mother are precious to my heart.  It was wonderful to revive our "cousinship" after so many years.  She sought me out on Maui to learn more about her Portuguese (Rego/Garcia/Bento) heritage.  I was grateful to spend time with Maxine at the Portuguese Heritage Center in Paʻia with lunch at Charleyʻs afterwards. She generously shared some of the lovely jewelry she created too.   I tried to reconnect with her in 2023 but the mail bounced back.  My deepest condolences to your family on Maxineʻs passing.  I remember her Maui visits as a young girl along with her brother Dutchie.  Charles Bentoʻs ʻohana lived close to me in Wailuku.  And,of course, Uncle Charlie and Aunty Loke in the Sand Hills.  May Maxine rest in peace and aloha.  God bless all of you.  And I hope this message reaches you after all this time.

Daniel, Danny, Ivy, and family -

Sorry to hear of your wife and mom's passing.  I truly enjoyed meeting her (and yourselves) when I was out there for my mom's services in 2019.  Based on all that I'd heard from my mom and yours (in the short time I got to know her), it sounds like they truly enjoyed each other's friendship and company - almost as if they had known each other for a lifetime. Interesting to see that they shared a same name.

Wow.. I just found out about dear Maxine, this morning. I am SO SORRY. I knew she had health problems, but she never complained about them. Always said that she was “getting along “.  She was always interested in what was going on with me and mom’s house. 
When I last spoke with her on her birthday, I never would have thought she had only a month and a half more to live. 
She might have told me before, but in my mind, I never knew that her middle name was THELMA, just like my mom’s first name. 
I truly appreciated the love that she had for my mom, and will miss our talks and the stories she shared about mom. 
May God keep you all in His care, and comfort you, at this hard time. So wish I could be there for the funeral. 
She was a fun loving woman, who God put in my mom’s life, just when she needed a friend, most. 
Mom really loved Maxine.

Please accept my sincerest condolescences for the passing of Big Nanny. She had a zest for life and remarkably sharp wit that made every meeting memorable. She kept you on your toes and had a magnetism that made you feel like you were the only person in the room. Rare are the qualities that Big Nanny displayed with ease. 

Most importantly, Big Nanny raised a wonderful ohana, the members of which are some of the most authentic and genuine people I have met. 

I'm sending aloha, hugs, and positive vibes to the entire Chamizo ohana. While the light grows dimmer today, with any hope these tough times will not be a remembrance of her passing, but rather a celebration and triumph of a life well and fully lived. 

May her life inspire us all.
