Pauline Leina’ala Bruhn Akimo passed away on October 23, 2020. She was surrounded by her loving family at her home in Kailua. She went home with our Lord and Savior peacefully. She was affectionately known to all as Aunty Lei, Lei, Leina’ala, and adoringly as “Tutu”. She was born to Amy Leilani Roy (Christ) & Paul James Bruhn Sr. on September 23, 1933 and was raised in Honolulu. She is pre-deceased by her husband Peter Ahoe Akimo and brother Paul James Bruhn, Jr. She is survived by: her sons Michael Kahalekulu Palenapa and Paul Kimo Palenapa (Candace), her stepchildren Maile Collignon (deceased), Leo, Peter Akimo, Cindy Akimo, George Akimo (Susie), Mary Akimo-Luuwai (Paul), as well as Grandchildren Pila Hoohauoli Palenapa, Parker Hanson, Mahina Meyer, Brandy Akimo, Peter James Akimo, and Hiilei Lu’uwai. Lei was a 13-year student of Maryknoll School and graduated in 1951. She continued to support the school throughout her years. She raised her family in the newly developed “Pohakupu” Subdivision soon after having children and remained in Kailua until her passing. Lei worked as a Medical Billing Clerk for several prominent Physicians and Surgeons for over 35 years. Lei loved to travel around the world on cruise ships and spend time with family in San Francisco. Lei met her husband “Pete” in 1979 and they soon married raising Pete’s granddaughter Brandy Akimo together. Lei was exceptionally close with her nieces Elizabeth Wallwork (Bruhn) and Paula Leoni (Bruhn) and their mother Beryl Dias Bruhn. She loved unconditionally her grand nieces and nephews: Chante, Shawn “Bubba”, Tiara, Travis, and Teva. Her close confidante throughout her entire life was her cousin Pua’ala Wong of Ka’ohao, Oahu. She remained close friends with the father of her children Norman “Uncle Pale” Palenapa and his wife Julie. Her aloha for her family both by blood relation, and through marriage manifests itself in continuous love with her daughter in law Candace Palenapa and her children: Ku’upilialoha, Poki’i Makamae, Kalikolehua, and former daughter-in-law Kristina Hanson and husband Eric. A Celebration of Life will be held later in 2021.
