Sheila Grover Toluta’u passed away peacefully at her home in Laie, Hawaii, surrounded by her family, at the age of 69. Born on September 22, 1955, in Palmer, Alaska, to Beverly Grover (later married to Sixto Barrera) and Rolland Grover, Sheila spent her early years between Alaska and Utah. She graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1973 and went on to study nursing at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
During a family vacation to Hawaii, Sheila met a shy Tongan boy, Viliami Toluta’u, at a BYU–Hawaii dance. Their long-distance courtship led to marriage and being sealed in the Laie Hawaii Temple in 1979.
Sheila and Viliami moved to Utah, Alaska, and then Tonga, where Sheila taught English at Liahona High School. In 1991, they settled permanently in Laie, Hawaii where she and Viliami raised their six children and built a life grounded in faith, family, service, and love.
Sheila’s career as a nurse was a lifelong calling. She served patients in Utah, Alaska, and finally Hawaii — including 14 years in Labor and Delivery and 20 in the Emergency Room at Kahuku Medical Center. Her compassion, cheerful presence, and dedicated service brought comfort and healing to thousands. She was a deeply respected caregiver and beloved colleague.
A devoted disciple of Jesus Christ and lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sheila served faithfully in many callings, including as Relief Society president, Young Women president, and as a dedicated ministering sister. She also supported her husband in his church service, including his time as a bishop. Her greatest joy was always her family—her birth family, her beloved husband, six children, and 29 grandchildren.
Sheila is survived by her husband, Viliami Asipeli Toluta’u; her children: Auguste, Savani, Talikavili, Tessi, Eleni, and Tevia; and her siblings: Tammy, Lori, Darcy, Galene, Randy, and Debbie. She was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly, her stepfather, Sixto, and her sister, Ronna Olsen.
Diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in December 2024, Sheila faced her final months with grace, courage, and unwavering faith in Heavenly Father’s plan. After a lifetime of caring for others, she was tenderly cared for by her daughters and her Kahuku Medical Center family.
Her legacy of love, compassion, and service will live on in every life she touched.
