Verna Kay Kauhai Escalante, age 84 passed on December 5, 2020, at her residence in Honolulu, HI. She was born February 2, 1936, to Solomon and Emogene Kalanui. Her children survive her: Hester Franco of Honolulu, HI, Maxine Cutler of Hilo, HI, Robert Escalante of Kurtistown, HI, Maximo Escalante of Tacoma, WA, Moroni Escalante of Gilbert, AZ, Angela Escalante of Tacoma, WA, Moses Escalante of Provo, UT, Raylene Garcia of Boise, ID and Donna Mae Kuhn of Homer, AK; by sisters Gladys Yee Poong, Aina Kalanui, and Frances Hernandez; by 40 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended ohana.
Verna K experienced the bombing of Pearl Harbor at just five years of age, where she remembers bombers flying over her home on the way to Pearl Harbor. She was one of the first in her family to graduate from college and held numerous leadership roles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Our dear mother made beauty all around her by showing her love where it mattered: in the home, in church, and in the community. By her example, she raised strong, loving, passionate, and loyal individuals. She served for decades as a Cub Scout leader, teaching young boys to be the best they can be, and taught them the value of hard work. She believed in quiet humble service to others.
