Yoomin Kim Awe, age 88, passed away comfortably on December 5, 2022. Yoomin had an amazing and wonderful life. She was born March 15, 1934, in a rural community near Harbin, China. She was the youngest of a large family of Sang Yup Kim and Sun Sook Paek, who named her Yoomin (柔民) meaning "tender person". During the Japanese invasion of Korea, her family fled to China. She returned to Korea at the end of WWII, but then had to flee again, this time south on the Korean peninsula during the Korean War. Eventually, Yoomin and her husband were guided to the United States of America where they continued their life-long service to God. Yoomin had multiple careers in education, finance and healthcare, and worked in many churches, missions and charities in Korea and across the United States, even until her last days in Hawaii.
She was predeceased by her parents, her older brothers and sisters, and loving husband, Reverend John Chulho Awe. She is survived by her first son, Moses & Theresa and grandchildren Harrison & Kirstin, Matthew & Jennifer, Moses & Jamie, and Solomon; and great grandchildren Samuel, Noah (of Jinhwa, deceased), and Grace; and her second son, Joseph & Annette and grandchildren Tara, Rachel, Abigail, Samantha, and great grandchild Ethan; and many nephews and nieces in the United States and South Korea.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Yoomin Kim Awe’s memory to the following charities where her children and grandchildren now serve:
