Christine Gray, 70, passed away on July 22, 2026. Born April 6, 1956, she was the daughter of Girvin and Stella Burnette, the eldest of five children, and grew up in Lumberton, North Carolina, where she attended Magnolia High School.
Christine met Tom Gray through Tom’s brother, Darrell, thus beginning a partnership marked by steady devotion and care. They were married on June 3, 1973, and together raised two children and her grandson, building a home shaped by her compassion, her tireless work, and the kind-hearted way she made others feel seen and supported.
She found joy in the thrill and camaraderie of racing, enjoying drag racing and circle track racing, and she proudly won the Powder Puff Races in circle track competition. Away from the track, Christine loved going to the beach and spending time fishing and hunting—simple pleasures that reflected her grounded spirit and appreciation for time outdoors.
Christine was a faithful presence at Bear Swamp Baptist Church in Pembroke, NC, where her warmth and considerate nature were part of how she lived her faith and cared for her community.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Girvin and Stella Burnette, and her brother, James Earl Burnette. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Tom Gray; her children, Michellene Gray and Justin Gray; her stepson, Tom R. Gray and his wife, Regina; her grandchildren, Zane, Raven, Jaden, Miranda, and Wyatt; her siblings, John Burnette, Sarah Catherine Burnette, and Stacy Lynn Burnette; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Christine will always be remembered as a steady presence, a loving soul, and a generous woman. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on July 31, 2026, at Reeves Funeral Home, 3308 N Main St, Hope Mills, North Carolina 28348.
