

Emma Marie Hughes was born on March 26, 1932, to the late George Israel Roach and Margaret Virginia Speight. She grew up in Pitt County, NC as a sharecropper’s daughter. She graduated from Chicod High School in 1952 an got married the same year to the late Raddy Glenn Hughes. The following year she had her first child followed by the second 9 days short of a year later. During this time, she worked for Coble Dairy. Shortly after the birth of their second child Raddy entered back into the Army and Emma remained a steadfast support to him. Their journeys took them to several states as well as Germany twice each time with a new bundle of joy. During the 22 ½ years she worked at a daycare in Ft. Lewis, WA, a girl scout leader, Tastee Food in Hope Mills, Woolworth & Company during the historical sit-ins and open her own restaurant with her husband Raddy. She retired in 1982 and started on her next journey with her husband. They traveled the state together serving the veterans of NC. They both were instrumental in the construction and operation of the Alms House in Hope Mills. She rose through the ranks of the DAV Auxiliary until becoming the State Commander in June of 1993 serving until June of 1994. She served over 10,000+ hours as the National Representative for the DAV Auxiliary at the Fayetteville NC VA hospital. She believed in the importance of serving others over herself. This led to her being awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1995 by Governor James B. Hunt Jr. She leaves behind a legacy that will be hard to follow.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jerry Curtis Hughes (Roger), Pamela Kay Komlofske (Rod), Annette Lynn Hughes, and Daniel Raymond Hughes (Marie) of the home; grandchildren, Patrick Russell Gaines (Marsha), Katherine Alicia Graves (Kevin), Millicent Louise Torres (Jorge), Victoria Alexis Hernandez (Manny), Magadalena Felicitas Komlofske, Anna Marie McCall (Devon), Justyn Case Cuen (Alani); eight great grandchildren and a host of loving friends and family.
She was preceeded in passing by her parents, the late George Israel Roach and Margaret Speight Roach; her loving husband, Raddy Glenn Hughes; a daughter, Debora Vivian Dunn, and a grandson, Timothy Keith Gaines.
