In 1982, Jerry moved with his family to Hope Mills, North Carolina. It was here that he set root and would build a life a man could be proud of.
Jerry was a pillar of the Hope Mills Community and served as Town Commissioner for over two decades. His roles in the community also included the civic development of Hope Mills, the Hope Mills Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustments, the Finance Committee, and the Air Quality Control Committee. His service with the Town of Hope Mills brought great improvements, both environmentally, as well as financially.
He was also extremely involved and influential with the youth of our community. His legacy will live on through the thousands of children and teens he coached and mentored. He began coaching baseball in 1988 and was head coach for over 24 years. Simultaneously, he served on the Board of Directors for the Hope Mills Youth Association for over 30 years. After his coaching years, he acted as umpire starting in 2009.
Jerry won many awards over the years attributed to his community service including being inducted into the Diamond Youth Baseball “Danny Jones Club”, and the Long Leaf Pine Award, which is one of the highest honors of the Governor’s Office. In 2025, The Town of Hope Mills named part of the baseball park in Jerry’s honor. On any given day, you can see children playing at the Jerry Legge Complex in the heart of the town.
Jerry leaves behind a family who supported him just as much as he supported them. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Diana Legge; his children, James Howard (Amy), Shawn Howard, Dawn Suttles (late husband-Dwayne), Tammy Legge Mabe (Jimmy), Chrissy Legge Stellwag (Arthur), and Bobbi Legge Harrington (Tim); 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; his sister, Gayle Legge (late husband Tom Gavorcik); his brothers, Edward Legge (Jeanne), and Frank Legge Jr (Pattie); a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives; as well as his beloved dog, Tucker.
Jerry’s legacy will live on, not only through his family, but also through the community he loved so much.
