Dr. Lionell Coulthurst, age 92, of Fayetteville, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Lionell was born May 26, 1929. Dr. Coulthurst (aka Uncle Lucky), son of the late Arnold and Idalia Coulthurst was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He departed this life after a brief illness and stay at Hope Mills Retirement Center in Hope Mills, NC. Dr. Coulthurst was preceded in death by his brother Eric Coulthurst. Lionell Graduated from Boys High School and immediately enrolled in the City College of New York, where he received his initial Bachelor of Science degree. After college he enlisted in the United States Air Force and began his career in the medical field. Upon leaving the Air Force, Lionell enrolled in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at New York University College of Dentistry, which is the third oldest and the largest dental school in the United States. After rigorously studying for eight years, he graduated receiving his PhD degree in Dentistry; he received Honors in “Special Patient Care” during his studies. Upon completing his internship, Dr. Coulthurst decided to open his own private practice on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York where his first patient was his sister Ilene; his work still stands strong to this day. While in private practice Dr. Coulthurst was a pillar in the community, where he instilled trust and friendship. He also joined the American Dental Association, which he remained a member throughout his career. Dr. Coulthurst confessed Jesus Christ as his "LORD and SAVIOR" at an early age. He was a devoted and faithful member of St. Albans Congregational Church in Queens, NY, where Reverend Hunter married him and Katherine. He served on the Deacon board until he and his wife Katherine moved to Albrightsville, PA. They became members of United Church of Christ in Jim Thorpe, PA, with Pastor Sigfried. Later, Dr. Coulthurst and his wife relocated to Ocala, FL, where they became members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor McSwain; they were loyal and faithful members, touching many lives. Their final relocation was Fayetteville, NC, to be closer to family because of his declining health. Dr. Coulthurst enjoyed gardening, fishing, watching fishing shows, and making people laugh with his wit and corny jokes.
Dr. Coulthurst leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted, loving wife of 32 years, Katherine Coulthurst; his devoted, caring stepson Marcus Whitmore; four children from his deceased wife Julia (Linda, Lloyd, Deidre, and Meryl Coulthurst); one loving sister, Ilene Granderson; three sisters-in-law (Carole Lewis, Doris Coulthurst, and Melonie Scott-Frierson); six grandchildren (Michael, Donavan, Alexis, Nicholas, Antwain, and Marquis); fifteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
