

Michael served his country with dedication for over 20 years in the United States Army, enlisting after High School on 2 April 1979 as a Combat Medic (91B) After serving overseas in Germany and Korea, Michael was selected for Special Forces Training as as Medical Sergeant. After earning his Green Beret, he served with the 5th Special Forces Group as a Senior Medical Sergeant. Michael also served with the SWIC and finally reached retirement while assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group after serving over 21 years
During his career, he earned numerous awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Valorous Unit Award and two Bronze Stars for his service in Southwest Asia. He also served during Desert Storm and Desert Shield, earning the Kuwait Liberation Medal for his contributions.
Beyond his service, Michael had a deep love for people and never met a stranger. His kindness, humor, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He loved motorcycles and was an avid rider, participating in numerous charity drives, always eager to help others in any way he could. He also was a mentor involved with the Veterans Court, helping other veterans to better themselves.
Michael was predeceased by his father, CSM E. Alan Thomas; his mother, Mary Maxine (Sheckels) Thomas; his son, Kenneth Michael Thomas; and his half sister, Dorothy Gettleman Crown of Silver Springs, Maryland. He is survived by his son, Ian Alan Thomas, of Portsmouth, NH; his brother, John C Thomas, of Hope Mills, NC; and his ex-wife, Kathie Kirk, of Atlanta, MI. His life of service, friendship, and adventure will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A scattering of Michaels ashes will take place on Saturday, August 16th, 2025 at the Special Forces Association National Headquarters located at 4990 Doc Bennett Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306; from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
