Sylvester Orosco Sr., 86, was born on December 4, 1939, and passed away on May 1, 2026. A faithful man of steady devotion, Sylvester carried himself with quiet dignity, offering kindness in everyday ways and meeting life with the pride of a hard-working provider and the warmth of a handsome presence that family and friends will long remember.
In his early years, Sylvester played Little League Baseball as a young boy. He graduated from Santa Maria High School, where he played football and ran track—pursuits that reflected his discipline and determination.
Drafted to the United States Army in the 1960s, Sylvester served his country with deep respect and enduring patriotism. He later retired from Santa Barbara County as a land surveyor, a role well-suited to his strong work ethic and careful, dependable nature. His appreciation for those who served never faded, and he was known to say, “From one veteran to another, thank you for your service.”
Sylvester was preceded in death by his father, Pablo Orosco (Ignacia ) and his mother, Della Gomez; his siblings, Bobby Gomez, Ruben Rivera, Arthur Gomez, Leroy Gomez, Rose Rico, Cecilia Pasmant, Angie Rodriguez, Amelia Orosco, Mary San Pedro, Esther Pasmant, Julietta Orosco, and Rachel Gallegos. In 1967, he married Esperanza, and together they raised 6 boys. He is survived by his wife, Esperanza Orosco; his children, Troy Orosco (Lorain), Edmund Escobar (Sharon), Anthony Escobar (Lynn), Sylvester Orosco Jr (Kris), Gregory Orosco (Linda), and Damian Ferrel; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; his sister, Marcella Armenta; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Sylvester found joy in the simple, meaningful rhythms of life. He enjoyed cooking and Santa Maria style BBQing, was on a bowling league, and took pride in gardening and pruning fruit trees and blueberry bushes, and enjoyed riding his riding lawn mower. He also enjoyed puzzles and Sudoko, and he loved sports, especially basketball, namely the Golden State Warriors. He loved dancing and singing, especially with the grandkids, and he was happiest when he was with his family. Above all, Sylvester loved to share his love for the Lord, living his faith with sincerity and extending it with gentle generosity to those around him.
