Walter was born in Danbury, CT on August 6th, 1931, to Dr. Walter James and Catherine (Boss) McCullough and raised on Long Island NY attending High School in Sayville, NY before entering the United States Air Force.
Walter’s U.S. Air Force service included positions as a B-52 Radar Navigator / Bombardier with 226 Vietnam Combat Missions, Strategic Air Command (SAC) Air Weapons Instructor, and SAC Intelligence Specialist Officer. He received numerous awards during his career but was most proud with the awarding of Vietnam Service Medal, 6 Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Walter attended St. Louis University, Inter American University and the School of Industrial Arts, receiving a degree in Aeronautics and a Master's Degree in business administration.
Walter retired from the Air Force on November 30th, 1975, from Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX after 21 years of service at the rank of LTC (O-5). He remained in Austin, TX after retirement working as a Tax Practitioner and then marrying Cynthia Jo Owens on June 12th, 1997.
Walter was an avid supporter of the University of Texas Longhorn athletics as a season ticket holder attending home games for football, baseball, woman’s basketball, and woman’s volleyball. He also was a charter season ticket holder for Alamo Bowl football games in San Antonio, TX.
Walter was the proud owner of a DYNO dual label maker and wouldn’t hesitate to make you labels. His filing system was immaculate with everything having a label.
Walter loved the Arboretum area in Austin for Restaurants and was proud to drop his American Express Platinum “Charter Member” credit card on the table.
Walter was an active member of St. Theresa Catholic Church while living in Austin, TX and a supporter to many charitable organizations to include warrior, Catholic, animal and cancer foundations.
Walter was a 93 year old true patriot and loved the American Flag and passed on Independence Day.
Walter is survived by his youngest son John McCullough (Retired Master Sergeant U.S. Army) and daughter in law Joan McCullough of Sanford NC and his only daughter Amy Cato of Austin TX, 6 grandchildren (Stephanie Tew of Greenville NC, Christina Murray of Sanford NC, Catherine McCullough of Fayetteville NC, Colton Cato of Austin TX, Eric McCullough of Watkinsville GA, and Kelly Brown of Woodstock GA, 13 great grandchildren (Riley, Reagan, Candence, Sophia, Emily, Alex, Hailey, Lucy, Samantha, Nolan, Alexandra, Aubrey, Savannah) and 1 great-great grandchild (Greyson).
Walter is preceded in death by his father Dr. Walter James McCullough, his mother Catherine Sharples, his son Walter James McCullough, his son William David McCullough (Retired Sergeant First Class U.S. Army), and his wife Cynthia McCullough.
Cremation will be by Reeves Funeral Home and Full Military Honor in Ground burial will be at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
