

Wayne Calvin Burns, 67, passed away on May 24, 2026. Born on October 16, 1958, in Robeson County, North Carolina, Wayne was the son of Robert and Shirley Burns. From an early age, he carried himself with a steady determination and a generous spirit—qualities that would remain evident throughout his life and in the many people who came to rely on him.
Wayne attended Southview High School, where he played football and ran track. He also enjoyed playing basketball at his church, Highland Baptist. In these early years, his diligence and loyalty to team, community, and faith were already taking shape, expressed in the quiet consistency with which he showed up and gave his best.
Wayne devoted his working life to serving others. He served on fire departments in the Hope Mills area for over 20 years and was Fire Chief of the Hope Mills Fire Department. He also served as Fire Marshall in Cumberland County, New Hanover County, and the city of Asheville, and worked as a paramedic for Cumberland County. His career reflected a steadfast work ethic and a deep regard for the well-being of others—service carried out with reliability, care, and a kind-hearted presence that left a lasting impression.
Wayne attended Grays Creek Church of God and was a member of the North Carolina Firefighters' Association. His commitment to faith and community was not loud or showy, but grounded and sincere, marked by the same loyalty and steady character that defined his life.
Wayne married Teresa Elmore in 1982, and together they were blessed with two children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Shirley Burns, and his brother, Larry Burns. He is survived by his wife, Teresa E. Burns; his children, Brian Burns and his wife, Heather, Ashley Matthews, and her husband, Maxwell; his grandchildren, Graham, Eva, Allie, Wesley, Griffin, Scarlet, Magnolia, and Gabriel; his brother Edwin Burns, and his wife Melody; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Visitation with family and friends will be held at Grays Creek Church of God, 4018 Chicken Foot Road, Saint Pauls, NC, on May 29, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A funeral service will follow at Grays Creek Church of God, 4018 Chickenfoot Road, Saint Pauls, NC, on May 29, 2026, at 12:00 pm. Burial will take place at Big Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hope Mills, NC.
