August 31, 1932 – October 8, 2025
Dean Oswald, a devoted family man, lifelong outdoorsman, and beloved “character” to all who had the pleasure of knowing him, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at the age of 93.
Born in Elmore, Minnesota, on August 31, 1932, to Ras and Irene Oswald, Dean lived a full life defined by love, faith, hard work, and a healthy dose of humor. His early years were spent in the heart of rural Minnesota, where his values of dedication and community were shaped.
Dean attended Waldorf University for two years before transferring to Mankato State University. Though he valued education, his true calling was found back on the land. Dean returned to his roots and embraced life as a farmer—a path that connected him deeply to nature and family. His career also took him into the world of banking, where he served as Vice President of Frost State Bank in Frost, Minnesota. He brought his integrity, warmth, and work ethic to every corner of his life.
On June 20, 1954, Dean married the love of his life, Theodora “Dorie” Oswald. Together they built a life rich in love, laughter, and memories. Their journey took them from the fields of Minnesota to the hills of Arkansas, always centered around family, faith, and the great outdoors.
Affectionately known as “Chute-Rooster,” Dean was a man who lived with purpose and a spark of mischief. He loved fishing, trap shooting, and hunting—especially when these pursuits ended with a good story to tell. He also had a quieter side, often found with a brush or pencil in hand, capturing life through painting and drawing.
Dean’s Lutheran faith was a cornerstone of his life. He lived his beliefs through service, kindness, and unwavering love for his family and friends. Some of his favorite memories were made during family vacations in northern Minnesota, cruising his property on a 4-wheeler, and spending long, peaceful hours on Lake Ouachita. Spring and fall were his cherished seasons—times of renewal and reflection that mirrored his spirit.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents, Ras and Irene Oswald; his brother, Ronald Oswald; brother-in-law, Daniel Nelson; and sister-in-law, Joann Oswald.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Theodora “Dorie” Oswald sisters-in-law Audrey Nelson and Gayle (James) Meehan.
Dean was the proud father of four children: Debra Lundberg (Robert Hanson) of Leadville, CO; Sheryl (Tommy) LaMont of Mount Ida, AR; Dennis (Sandy) Oswald of Frost, MN; and John Oswald of Frost, MN. He was a loving grandfather to; Renae Hueper (Rory) of Watertown, SD; Jeffery LaMont (Janae) of New Richland, MN; Triston (Megan) Lundberg of Leadville, CO; Amelia (Eric) Mattie of Mankato, MN; Merissa (Jon) Lore of Frost, MN; Trent Oswald of Frost, MN; Robert Sannwald of Littleton CO; Tori Oswald of Frost, MN; and Taryn Oswald of Frost, MN.
His legacy continues through twelve great-grandchildren: Laura, Jamis, Aubrey, Zoe, Mikayla, Samantha, Conner, Brystal, Tanner, Gareden, Lakyn, and Olin—and three great-great-grandchildren: Cass, Jamison, and Emerson. Each of them held a special place in Dean’s heart, and he loved them dearly.
Dean Oswald was a good man—a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, strength, faith, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his stories, lessons, and love will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
