Debert Hammer Graves, Jr., of Hot Springs, Arkansas, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 20, 1937, in Walnut Valley, just outside of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Bert proudly attended Fountain Lake School where he was affectionately known as Junior by friends and family. He grew up in the Walnut Valley Baptist church and then joined the First Baptist Church of Hot Springs after marrying Carilyn Lou Wright on June 10 , 1960. He lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service — a life that blessed everyone who knew him.
Bert was a man of remarkable integrity, humility, and kindness. Known for his generosity, patience, and warm spirit, he could light up a room with a smile or one of his corny jokes. He was loving, thoughtful, compassionate, and deeply God-fearing — a true example of a life well lived. Bert and Carilyn spent many years traveling and camping to explore the beauty and history of 49 states and beyond. He especially loved dancing with his beloved wife, affectionately known as his “Honey Pot.” She saw to it that he was always put together with a freshly pressed shirt and starched jeans while he would add a pair of his signature suspenders.
He served his country with honor in the U.S. Army and National Guard, remaining active during the Berlin Crisis. Bert also built an impressive 40-year career in banking, rising from teller to Senior Vice President, while attending Georgia Tech and the LSU School of Banking. He served his community as two- term President of the South Hot Springs Lion’s Club and on the board of the Salvation Army for many years.
In addition to his career in finance, Bert was an entrepreneur — running a used car business before he and Carilyn built a thriving home rental business through which many special friends were made. The two shared nearly 65 beautiful years of marriage and were looking forward to their 65th anniversary this June.
Debert and Carilyn were blessed with three daughters:
• Jennifer Bain (and her late husband, Mike) of Hot Springs, AR
• Laura Sue Graves, who preceded him in death
• Lu Anne and Randy Floyd of Shawnee, OK
He was a proud grandfather to Ashley James of Hot Springs, Mark and Tarakae Hughes of India, Madeline Leigh and Chase Pendery of Norman, OK, Jacob Floyd of Shawnee, OK, and Joshua and Jill Floyd of Oklahoma City, OK. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Jackson Hammer and Decker James, and Karsynn, Luke, and Emma Kate Hughes.
A memorial service celebrating Bert’s life will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Gross Funeral Home in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The Pallbearers are Randy Floyd, Jacob Floyd, Joshua Floyd, Jackson Hammer James, Ricky Graves, and Dillan Garibay. Honorary Pallbearers are Mark Hughes, Darrell Graves, Chase Pendery, and Scotty Dukes.
Bert leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered always.
