Francis proudly served his country in the United States Army, spending approximately 18 months stationed in Germany during his military service.
Horse racing was a large part of Francis’ life. He spent many years training thoroughbred racehorses and traveled throughout the country pursuing his passion for the sport. He also served as a stall superintendent at Oaklawn Racetrack in Hot Springs, where he was a familiar face to many in the racing community.
Francis was also a talented auto mechanic and the owner of Klein Auto Detail. When he wasn’t working or at the racetrack, he enjoyed playing golf and spending time at the casino.
More than anything, Francis will be remembered for his outgoing personality and his genuine love of people. He truly never met a stranger. Francis could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and it usually didn’t take long before a stranger became a friend. His stories, humor, and easygoing nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Doreen Klein.
Francis is survived by his children, Mark Klein and his wife, Patricia, of St. Louis, Missouri; Terri Flint of Louisville, Kentucky; Debbie Krajcir and her husband, Steve, of Hot Springs; Kathy Webber of Hot Springs; Mick Klein of Hot Springs; and Greg Klein and his husband, Kevin Zinke, of Hot Springs.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shawn Klein, Anthony Klein, Kristen Leonard, Lance Flint, Kevin Krajcir, Grant Webber, Nathan Webber, and Tyler Standridge; as well as other extended family members and many friends whose lives were touched by Francis through the years.
A visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Gross Funeral Home, with the Holy Rosary being recited at 4:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Springs Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oaklawn Chaplaincy in Francis’ memory.
