It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Jacob Runnels, a free spirit and genuine daredevil who embraced life with unrivaled zest. Known affectionately as "Jake the Snake" for his fearless escapades in the wild, Jacob was a true adventurer whose love for BMX bikes, the great outdoors, and everything in between made him unforgettable.
Jacob’s life was one big adventure. Whether he was riding his BMX bike through daring terrains or catching snakes with his bare hands, he lived for the thrill of exploration. His adventurous spirit was matched only by his love for the outdoors which fueled his career choices. As a carpenter and a golf course aficionado, Jacob’s craftsmanship was as solid as his character. His skills with wood and his eye for detail reflected his boundless energy and creativity.
From his early days, Jacob was a vibrant personality who wasn’t afraid to stand out. His love for firearms, fishing, and hunting were as much a part of him as his notorious "made you look" pranks, which always kept everyone on their toes. And if you ever doubted his commitment to his principles, just remember his spirited boycott of Heinz ketchup—a stand he took with as much fervor as he did his passion for peanut butter. Jacob was never seen without a jar of his favorite spread, and PB&J sandwiches were his culinary claim to fame.
Jacob’s first car, a black 1987 Camaro with white racing stripes, was his pride and joy, meticulously cleaned and admired. But his greatest treasures were the bonds he formed. He had a special, cherished relationship with his grandmother, Mary Hoskinson-Zenner, who preceded him in death, and his loyal companion, “Streets,” a dog he rescued and raised. Their love and loyalty were constants in Jacob’s life.
A devoted Christian, Jacob kept his Bible close in his pickup truck, finding comfort and guidance in his faith. His favorite retreat was Guanella Pass in Colorado—a place where he felt truly at peace and at home.
Jacob is survived by his father and stepmother, Leo & Tabatha Runnels; his mother and stepfather, Elizabeth & Mark Monje; his brothers, Matthew Runnels and Nicholls Gilliland; his aunt and uncle, Glenda and Janusz Sowinski; his uncle, Glen Runnels; cousin, Randy Fisher; grandfather, Billy Runnels of Washington; step-grandfather, Charles Strozier; and his step-grandmother, Sara Runnels.
While Jacob’s adventurous spirit has departed from this world, his legacy of daring exploits, unwavering principles, and boundless love will continue to inspire and bring smiles to those who knew him. Rest in peace, Jake the Snake. Your fearless joy and infectious laughter will be missed but never forgotten.
