Born in Little Rock, Jim was the son of Helene and Hubert Blakley. He grew up in Benton and graduated from Benton High School. His first job was working in the family business, Blakley’s Hardware Store. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Jim dedicated much of his professional life to the State of Arkansas, serving as Director of Established Industry at Arkansas Industrial Development Commission (AIDC – now known as AEDC). In this role, he contributed to the economic growth and industrial advancement of the state he loved.
Jim was a Christian and remained active in his church community at First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs for as long as his health allowed.
Jim had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He was an avid runner and hiker who found joy and peace in nature. Known for his remarkable ability to build or fix anything, Jim approached every project with skill and determination. In retirement, he made his home on Lake Hamilton, where he and his beloved wife June created lasting memories with their children and grandchildren while boating, playing and enjoying life on the water together. He is survived by his devoted wife Vonda June Blakley, sister Betty Waddoups, son Jamey Blakley (Lisa), daughters Lynda Rogers (Jimmy), Trisha Haught (James) and Torre Taylor. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Chase Blakley (Mara), Dylan Rogers, and Loren Blakley Marsh (Jonathan), all of whom brought him great joy. He also leaves behind two great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Helene and Hubert Blakley, sister Mary Mitchell, and his special pup Trina. Also preceding him in death was Betty Blakley McBurnett, his former wife and mom to Jamey and Lynda.
His legacy lives on through the family he loved deeply and the many lives he touched through his work and friendships. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army, the Little Rock Compassion Center, or the Wounded Warriors Project.
The family will have a private memorial service.
