Ms. Jackie, I will always remember the smiles and kindness of Jim and you. Was always  a pleasure to deliver to your home. Jamie Frye, your ex-mail carrier. 

Jim was a wonderful person and extremely important in our daughter's lives.  Jim taught both girls the oboe.  His patience and love of sharing his craft was exceptional!  Our oldest daughter succeed in getting a college scholarship beause of her diligence and Jim's teaching.  We thought the world of Jim!  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jackie and his family.  Jim will never be forgotten! God Bless!



Dear Jackie and Family:

Jim, or Jimmy as our family knew him, was a larger than life "double cousin"  and a towering figure to me as I grew up in Hot Springs.  Nine years my senior, he was a pathfinder to my mind, blazing a trail to the Golden State and living a life I only dreamed about.  I give him partial credit for planting a seed that opened the highways of potential for my future.

I know at this time of his passing there are no words that can lessen your sorrow, but know that he was an important person in my life. Even though we never were "pals" or spent much time together outside of family gatherings when I was a child his person still loomed large and influential.

I will, unfortunately, not be able to attend the celebration of his life, but be assured I have him, you and Belinda in my thoughts.  I wish you all the peace that will come with time.

What does one say when a great man passes?  Many of my fondest memories involve standing in West Wind and listening to him play along with my daughter.  She was never so good as when playing next to Jim; he brought out the best music, but also the best in human behavior.  He truly taught by example.  I sat in the Community Band and marveled at his virtuosity, but he was a modest man and never sought attention.  He was also a man's man (marine; CHP), and he was a wonderful influence on my daughter, both musically and morally. He was also a good friend whose effect upon my family was a constant joy.  We in my family are praying for Jim and for his entire family.    

James and I were in the 1957 HSHS graduating class and I had worked with him at the Sunset Drive-In Theater as well.  He was always upbeat about things and worked well with everyone.  The last time I saw him was in the late '70s when I had my PR agency, Cunningham Communications, in the old ABT building.  He had retired from the California Highway Patrol and wanted me to do a resume for him.  We talked about our times together at the Sunset which I enjoyed so much.  He had quite a legacy and I'm better for having known him.  I pray for peace and blessings for his family and loved ones.  He was an inspiration.

Describing what Jim Flowers came to mean to me over the past 25 years goes well beyond my talent as a writer to adequately express the  amount of respect and admiration I’ve come to have for him over that time.  Not only a man dedicated to family,  Jim was a passionate patriot, a lover of the arts, a champion for justice, a compassionate humanitarian,  an advocate for truth and a builder of relationships because he loved people.  I’ve never had a more loyal and selfless friend.  I seriously doubt anyone has.

From a Marine to a CHP motor officer to a concert oboist  to an expert in a very difficult field, he never felt he ever had a real job.  That was due mostly to his attitude about life, the tasks of life, and who he shared it with.

He would tell you that he was no one particularly special.  I would tell you however, those are the ones who usually are.  My brother James E. Flowers was the perfect example.  Thanks, Jim.
