James Elmer Flowers, age 79, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from pneumonia and complications of Parkinson’s and Heart Disease. He was preceded in death by his grandson Sean Michael Flowers, his brother Royce Flowers, and his parents Roy and Ann Flowers and his infant sister. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jackie Flowers, his beloved Fox Terrier Belinda, sons Jim Flowers (Cathy) of Healdsburg, CA and Jeff Flowers (Julie) of Arkansas, stepdaughters Terry Yamamoto-Edwards (Chris) of Hawaii, and Amy Blackburn (Jeff) of Laguna Hills, CA; grandchildren Kyle & Emily Flowers, Jackie Jo & Jamie Blackburn and Khalil and Noah Edwards.
Jim was born and raised in Hot Springs and graduated from Hot Springs High School. He spent 6 years in the US Marine Corp Reserves. He moved to California and worked for the US Postal Service, Union Carbide and as a traffic officer with the California Highway Patrol, from which he retired. Upon moving back to Hot Springs, he opened West Wind Music, specializing in expert instrument repairs. In 1991, he closed the store to work as an Accident Reconstructionist Expert for Jackson Reconstruction, Inc.
Jim was a professional oboe player, playing principal oboe in the Orange County/Long Beach Doctor’s Symphony, Santa Rosa Baroque Sinfonia, Marin Symphony, South Arkansas Symphony, Pine Bluff Symphony and The Hot Springs Community Band. He played in many ensembles with his Baroque oboe that he built, often using the harpsichords that he built. He taught many oboe students in California and Arkansas.
A Celebration of His Life Service will be held in the fellowship hall of Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 29th, at 2:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Garland County Humane Society, the Hot Springs Community Band, or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
The family especially wants to thank his special caregiver, Connie Bradley, the excellent and compassionate staff of Med II at National Park medical Center, Dr. Michael Mullins (Jim’s cousin) and the entire Health Star Physician’s Group.
