John “Mike” Hattersley, 77, passed away on December 14, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty. Though he most recently lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Mike spent the majority of his life in Portland, Texas, a place that always remained home in his heart.
Mike was born in September 1948 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to John and Joann Hattersley. He graduated from Gregory-Portland High School, where the roots of many lifelong friendships were formed.
A devoted father and grandfather, Mike is survived by his sons, Mike Hattersley II and Chris Hattersley, along with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who brought him immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Dawn Folks, whom he carried in his heart every day.
Mike had a deep passion for the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were not just hobbies but traditions he lovingly passed down to his children and grandchildren, teaching them patience, appreciation for nature, and the joy of time spent together. An avid Dallas Cowboys fan, he rarely missed a chance to cheer on his team. He also loved playing golf and was happiest when surrounded by family.
Known as the family historian, Mike was rarely seen without a camera in hand. As the family photographer, he captured countless moments at gatherings and celebrations, preserving memories that will be cherished for generations.
Mike will be remembered as kind, and a best friend to everyone he met. His loyalty—to his family, his friends, and his beloved Cowboys—was unmatched. What people loved most about Mike was his genuine heart, his passion for life, and the way he made everyone feel like family.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
