It is with great sadness that the family of Juanita Riley Campbell Johanningmeier announces her passing on March 30, 2019 at the age of 91. Nita, a daughter of God, was born on February 7, 1928 in Buena Vista, Arkansas to Xondalius Neal and Mary Della Allen Riley. After living in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, she moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2012 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Patrick Humphries.
After graduating from Stephens High School (Arkansas) in 1946, she enrolled in nursing school, but was diagnosed with tuberculosis and not allowed to attend. After a one-year recovery, she married Charles W. Campbell in 1947, and had two daughters, Susan and Charlotte Anne Hinkle, who resides in Broussard, Louisiana. In 1979, she married Allen Johanningmeier of Metairie, Louisiana.
When her daughters were in junior high school, Nita entered nursing school in 1965 in Galveston, Texas achieving her dream career and scoring in the top 3 of all tested in a 3-state region. Her nursing career included ICU/CCU at Galveston County Hospital, ICU/CCU at Ochsner’s Hospital in New Orleans, Assistant Director of Nursing for Metairie Nursing Home, and clinical nurse at Amite County Clinic in Liberty, Mississippi. She retired at the age of 79 to care for her second husband, Allen, who was diagnosed with cancer. Nita’s compassion and caring of others was her passion. She also loved to play duplicate bridge and played here in Hot Springs through Women’s Welcome Club and at elks Lodge until August 2017.
Her other prideful accomplishment was to see her daughter become strong women with full faith in Jesus Christ, strong Christian values and morals, noble character, high ethics in career accomplishments, and a deep love for family and friends. Susan and Anne are very blessed to have her influences on their lives, as she taught them to always do their best and to take time to listen to others.
She is predeceased by her parents, and all five of her siblings Francille Henley (Dr. Paul) of El Dorado, AR, James Riley, also of El Dorado, Maxine Atkinson (Dr. Harry) of Fordyce, AR, Lucius Riley (Martha) of Monroe, LA, and Virginia Faye Duncan (Jim) of Bartlett, TN. She is survived by her daughters, three grandchildren – Ryan Humphries of Hot Springs, Susanne Patterson (George) of Marrero, LA and Clifford Hinkle III (Lindsey) of Norco, LA, as well as three great grandchildren – Harley Patterson, Henry Hinkle, and Haley Hinkle.
Susan, Patrick and Anne want to thank those who showed such gracious, kind and respectful care for Nita in the past year – Dr. William Cole, the staffs of Brookfield Assisted Living and The Pine South Nursing Home, and Kindred Hospice.
