I stumbled across this notice and was heart broken. I lived down the street from Steve on Hillcrest Dr.  when we were just kids.   He was a great friend. We played neighborhood baseball and I remember going to his house to bake a cake when we were kids.  Later our paths  crossed again while we attended Purdue . The last time I saw Steve is when I visited him in Midland Michigan.  We went on a scavenger hunt via car.   It was so much fun. I can see why he loved the thrill of racing. I was devastated when I heard the news that Steve had died. Steve was one of my favorite teammates on the gymnastics team in high school.  We spent a lot of time together practicing, and even attended a gymnastics summer camp together.  Our team won the Indiana State Championship our junior and senior years.  He had a great sense of humor, a strong work ethic, high integrity, and was a friend to everyone on the team.   One of the many things that impressed me about Steve was how he responded when our coach asked him to be our All-Around gymnast our senior year.  We didn't have anyone on the team who was planning on doing it (everyone did just one or two events). If no one did All-Around, our team would lose those points in meets.  Steve was an excellent gymnast on the Parallel Bars, and was on track to be one of our top competitors on that event his senior year.  When Coach asked him to do All-Around, he accepted the challenge - which probably sacrificed any chance he had of placing high at State on P-bars. Instead of spending all practice working on and refining his skills on one event, now he had to do a crash course on 5 additional events and learn enough moves on each to put together competitive routines. He did it very well, and sacrificed personal glory for the good of the team.  I always admired him for that. 

I worked for Steve at the Epoxy Tech center and he was small in stature but a giant amongst men. He was selfless person and the best supervisor I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Even though he had a very high position at the company he gave up 4 hours of his evening to drive 60 miles to my graduation of a course that I took in Clear Lake, who does that? What a great man and a mentor. He will be missed by many may he rest in peace and my prayers are with his family.

Steve was a great boss and great person.   Always leading by example and demanding excellence.  I am a better person for working  with and knowing him.  My prayers are with his family.

To all of Steve's family - May God watch over you during this painful time.  Steve was such a great guy and one hell of a human being.  He will be missed by many. 

He once told me that there are no speed limits in heaven!

I admired Steve as a leader, appreciated him as a mentor, and trusted him as a friend.  I’m SO sorry for your loss. Words are not adequate to express my sense of loss. May God hold you in his divine embrace during this very difficult time. Steve was loved and respected by those he met. God bless the family. 

I will miss my track "parking" neighbor, chasing him in the Stang, his sense of humor, fairness, goodness...  Still in shock, still tearing up... So blessed to have known him.  God bless his family, track family and friends. We've lost a fantastic one. 

Steve was always smiling and happy to go the extra mile to help. He is a big part of our extended family. We will truly miss him. Our prayers are with the Sands family.  Peaceful rest Brother Steve. 

So very shocked and sad to hear the news about Steve. He was an outstanding leader of both people and technology. My heart goes out to all of the family. Prayers for peace in the coming days. 

Steve, will be missed by many, especially all the driver's he touched in the motorsports world.  
Steve was a highly technical and skilled driver who shared his knowledge and love for driving with many of our students over the years. 
He lives on through all he shared with us on and off the track.
It was a honor for us to have him as part of our track family.

Steve Sands, we will miss you.  Steve was a good friend of mine and I could always count on him to provide honest and direct discourse.  He valued his family, his friends, and his zeal for living life.  His absence will be difficult to overcome, but his memories will sustain my grief over  his loss.

Steve, you will be sorely missed buddy...what a great friend and mentor! Always with great wit and humor but honest and caring, willing to lend a hand.  We will all miss seeing you and 5PTOMG...still in disbelief...

God bless you my friend. We are praying for your wife and family.  Hope you’re resting at the race track resort in the sky!

 Steve was a honest man who knew how to joke around and make people laugh around him. He loved living life and I’m glad that he got to do a lot of the things he was happy with. I will miss Steve very much as I feel something missing in my life now.
