W.T. “Tom” Howard, 70, passed away March 10, 2018. Tom was born in Lane, Oklahoma to the late Gerald and Ora Howard.

An accomplished thoroughbred horse trainer, some of Tom’s best horses included Oaklawn-raced Rocket Twentyone and Oaklawn stakes winners Heart Appeal, Stormin’Suzy and Ain’t He a Pistol. He was also very proud of Ivan Fallunovalot, 2015 Texas Thoroughbred Horse of the Year, Breeder’s Cup contender, who most recently ran third in the 2018 Hot Springs Stakes.

Tom loved his wife, Kathleen Moore Howard; daughter, Melissa Howard; pups Sophie and Pie; siblings Danny, Sam, Gerald, Johnny, Mary, Wanda, and Wayne; dear friends Frank Fletcher and Lewis Matthews; and many more friends, too numerous to name, who cannot imagine Tom not being in a barn somewhere, reading the paper in the company of his favorite horse.

He was predeceased by his brother, Roger Howard.

A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at Gross Funeral Home Wednesday, March 14 at 2 pm.

Tom was one of the most honest and pleasant person I have ever had the opportunity to be associated with. He was a guy that I would trust with everything I owned. He never hid anything from me or did anything behind my back. This is a trait that is rarely found in the horse racing industry today. I believe the reason he was so successful with the horses he ran for us was because he always did it by the books and never tried to win by going over the line on the rules. This is a example of where the good guy does win in the end. You will be dearly missed by all

Kathy,
Jeanette and I send our sincere condolences to you and Tom's family. Tom was truly a gentleman and will be missed by so many people.
Although our racing circuits were different over the last few years, we'll always remember coming over to your house for dinner and drinks during the Louisiana Downs summer racing season. It was always fun.
Lots of love from us.
