

Brenda Lea Townsend Washington was born on September 25, 1948 to the union of Southern Townsend, Sr. and Mary Johnson Townsend. Brenda accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age by the Reverend Wilton Picou at New Rising Sun Baptist Church.
After a long battle with illness, while displaying an incredible amount of strength and courage, Brenda transitioned into the arms of the Lord on March 10,2026.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 21,2026 at New Rising Sun Baptist Church 230 St Charles St Houma, Louisiana. Interment will follow in the New Rising Sun Baptist Church Cemetery.
Brenda attended Southdown High School and went on to further her education at Southern University, where she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. She dedicated 33 years to educating the youth of Terrebonne Parish, teaching at Upper Little Caillou Elementary, Elysian Fields Elementary, and Evergreen Middle School.
Later in life, she continued her mission of service by serving as president of the LA Retired Teachers Association, District 2, and the New Rising Sun Baptist Church Beautifying Club. She was also a proud member of the New Rising Sun Soul Specials and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated.
Brenda leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Malcolm Washington and Michelle(Aaron) Davis; Siblings Joseph (Martha) Townsend, Sr., Joyce (the late James) Harris, Wayne (Elaine) Townsend, and Ray Townsend; grandchildren, Marquis Washington and Shanaya Washington; great-grandchildren, Makayla and Mackenzie.
Brenda is preceded in death by her parents, Southern Townsend, Sr. and Mary Johnson Townsend; husband Warren Grant Washington; brothers Southern Townsend, Jr. and Jessie Townsend; niece Tiffany Suzanne Townsend Pledger; paternal grandparents James and Matilda Townsend; maternal grandparents Clarence Johnson and Bertha Clark Newton.
