Carney Ernest Lewis Sr.

Bro. Carney Ernest Lewis Sr., a resident of Houma, LA, entered eternal rest on September 13, 2025. He was born to the union of Ernest and Mayhaley Lewis on February 22, 1939, in New Orleans, LA. Bro. Carney accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Reverend T.J. Ellis here at New Jerusalem BC.

He was educated in the Terrebonne Parish School System where he excelled on the basketball court. Bro. Carney was joined in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Betty Jean Butler for over 63 years. To this union, they were blessed with three children: Christine, Lisa and Carney (Cecil) Jr. Lewis. He was an usher who served diligently. He enjoyed doing odd jobs in and around the church. He was also “Mr. Fix It” at home, and of course, no one could cut or edge his grass better than him. Bro. Carney was an avid sports fan. You name it, he watched it, as long as it was sports. When the sports were off, he tuned in to Westerns! He kept the remote near. He loved his family and had a special relationship with his grandchildren. He loved being around family! Bro. Carney was employed at Quality Furniture and Flynn Supply Co. after retiring from the Terrebonne Parish School Board, where he served for many years.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted spouse, Betty Lewis; daughter, Lisa (Darris) Eugene; sister, Bertha Riley; brother, Henry Lewis; daughter-in-law, Sandra Lewis; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; grandchildren, Casey Harris, Maghan (Corey) Johns and Madison Eugene; great-grandchildren, James

Thomas, Cassidy, Mycah and Maison Johns; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Bro. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mayhaley Lewis; sisters, Lillian Lewis and Nora Jackson; his brother, Ernest Lewis Jr.; a son, Carney (Cecil) Lewis Jr.; and his daughter, Christine Lewis.

A visitation for Bro. Carney Ernest Lewis Sr., will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 2424 Grand Caillou Rd, Houma, LA. A funeral service will occur Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 11:00 AM, 2424 Grand Caillou Rd, Houma, LA. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Ranch Cemetery, 100 Jim Bowie Rd, Houma, LA.
