1949 – 2025
James Bowman, III, affectionately known as “Junior,” passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of service, wisdom, and unwavering love. Born in 1949, James lived a life rooted in purpose, education, and deep devotion to family and community.
A proud veteran, James served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972. Upon returning home, he pursued higher education with determination, earning his Master’s degree from Southern University in 1977 and later achieving a Master’s plus 30 in 1987. His commitment to learning became the foundation of a remarkable 32-year career as an educator in the Terrebonne Parish school system, where he inspired generations of students with patience, integrity, and heart.
James was united in love and partnership with his devoted wife, Patricia Mitchell Bowman. Together, they raised two sons, Desmond Allen (Lashunda) and Terrence Sylvester, and nurtured a growing family that brought him immense pride and joy. He was a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren, including Cierra Mebane, and five great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored deeply. His loyal dog, Kensley, was his constant companion and fishing buddy.
To know James was to know his passion: fishing. Whether casting a line at dawn or sharing stories by the water’s edge, he found peace, joy, and connection in every ripple. “Fishing, fishing, and fishing”—that was his happy place.
James is survived by his loving brother, Larry Bowman (Trudy), and three devoted sisters: Cenobia Hampton (Jules), Vivian Aguillera, and Yolanda Bowman. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Bowman, Jr. and Lois Miller Bowman; his sisters, Sherry Lindsey and Betty Bowman; and his brother-in-law, Roy Lindsey, Sr.
James Bowman, III will be remembered for his quiet strength, his generous spirit, and the countless lives he touched as a teacher, mentor, soldier, brother, husband, father, and friend. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A visitation for James will be held Saturday, November 22, 2025 from 9:00 AM until service time of 11:00 AM at Jones Funeral Home, 230 S Hollywood Rd., Houma, LA 70360. He will be laid to rest at 1:00 PM Monday, November 24, 2025 in the Louisiana National Cemetery, 303 W Mt Pleasant Zachary Rd, Zachary, LA 70791.
