March 30, 1947 – June 27, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound love, we celebrate the life of Larry Mitchell, who peacefully departed this life on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on March 30, 1947, Larry was a man whose life was defined by hard work, unwavering devotion to his family, and a quiet strength that earned the respect of everyone who knew him. He believed in providing for those he loved and demonstrated every day what it meant to be a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
One of the greatest blessings of Larry’s life was meeting the love of his life, Gloria. Their love story began in Houma, Louisiana, where they met and fell in love before being united in marriage in 1969. Together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, love, and family, creating a legacy that will continue for generations.
Larry found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved watching classic Western movies, listening to old-school R&B music, preparing delicious barbecue for family and friends, and cheering on his favorite wrestling matches. Whether sharing a meal, telling stories, or spending time with those he loved, Larry's greatest happiness came from being surrounded by family.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories his beloved wife, Gloria Mitchell; his three sons, Lawrence Jones (Sharon), Mark Jones, and Roy Jones, all of Houma, Louisiana; his two daughters, Gloria Davis (Sidney) and John Marie Mitchell, of Houma, Louisiana; nine grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, Elijah Bogen.
He is also survived by two brothers, Don Craig Mitchell (Patsy) and Rev. Gregory Bruce Mitchell (Gwendolyn); four sisters, Susanne M. Harris, Arline Mitchell, Valerie M. Campbell (George), and Dr. Vernicia M. Thomas; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many cherished friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua Mitchell, Jr. and Georgiena Alma (Jackson) Mitchell; his sister, Emelda Mitchell Stringer; and his brother, Earl Ray Mitchell, Sr.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life honoring Larry's life and legacy will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow at New Rising Sun Baptist Church Cemetery.
Larry will be remembered as a hardworking man who loved his wife and family with all his heart. His kindness, quiet wisdom, generous spirit, and enduring love will forever remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. Though he has departed from this earthly life, his legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
