

Ridgely Mitchell, Jr. was born on January 13, 1941, to the late Ridgely Mitchell, Sr. and Ethel London Mitchell, of St. James, LA. He received his early education in the St. James Parish School System.
After graduating from Magnolia High School, Vacherie, LA, in 1960, Ridgely joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He spent 4 years on active duty and 2 years in the Marine Reserves. He later attended and graduated from Southern University and A&M College of Baton Rouge, LA.
He was a very dedicated educator. He taught school in Jefferson Parish, St. John Parish and St. James Parish. He was also a principal at St. James High School. In his lifetime, Ridgely wore many hats. God blessed him with many skills. He was a jack of many trades, a few of which he mastered. If you needed carpentry, electrical or air conditioning repairs, he was the guy to call. He was always willing to give a helping hand when needed. He was a tax consultant, financial advisor and insurance agent. Ridgely was a great athlete. He was a dominate pitcher in softball and baseball. He was also very actively involved in his community. Ridgley served as the confidential assistant and Assistant Director of Operations to the St. James Parish President.
In November 2017, he made his new home in Ruston, LA where he was protected, loved and cared for by his brother Patrick, his sister-in-law Acquanette and their family. “It was an honor and a pleasure taking care of you, our brother. We thank God for the opportunity. We will always cherish the memories we shared, and we will miss you dearly.” He later resided at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home in Monroe, LA still under the watchful eyes of his brother and his wife. He lived comfortably, peacefully and contented there until his death. The staff and residents there loved him and took great care of him.
He was married to Daisy Gros Mitchell until the time of her death in October 2017. He leaves to treasure memories of him - Son: Keith (Hannah); Stepchildren: Jonathan Dumas and Dawn Dumas; Brothers: Harry, Sr. (Lillian), Patrick, Sr. (Acquanette), Blair, Sr. (Stella), Brian (Doreen); Sisters: Elaine (Tommy) Thompson and Debra Whittington; Sister-in-Law: Rose (Teddy) Boudoin: a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ridgely Sr. and Ethel Mitchell, brothers Nathaniel and Leroy Mitchell, Sr.
Visitation will be held at Grace Covenant Fellowship Church, 2709 Senator St, Houma, LA 70363, on September 12, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:45 am, followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00am.
Military Honors will take place at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Cemetery, 13281 LA-644, Vacherie, LA 70090, on September 12, 2026, 2:15 pm, followed by the Committal Service.
