Visitation will be from 12 noon until funeral time at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at New Rising Sun Baptist Church, 230 St. Charles Street in Houma. Burial will follow in Southdown Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby McGuire Byrd; sons, Johnell Verrett, Zamir, Zarius and Stephon Lance Byrd, II.; daughter, Jazzmine Byrd; four grandchildren; father, James Byrd, Jr. (Octavia); brother, Fabian D. Byrd (Theresa); sisters, Yeka Byrd, Aja Thibodeaux (Aaron) and Kenya Stewart; mother-in-law, Leola McGuire; godchildren, Fabian Byrd, Jr., Timothy Harvey, Jr., Jean Perry, Dajour McGuire and Jessica Brown.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ora Mae Seals Byrd; paternal grandparents, James and Alma Young Byrd; maternal grandparents, Otis and Henrietta Seals; and father-in-law, Eugene McGuire.
