

Sylvester was born on August 21, 1938, to the late Leonard and Leola Hawkins Ray. Raised in a family deeply rooted in faith and Christian values, he was educated in the Terrebonne Parish School System and carried those principles throughout his life.
On February 1, 1958, Sylvester was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Audrey L. Lewis. Their loving union was blessed with five children: Sylvester Ray, Jr., Johnny Ray, Kevin Ray, Billy Ray, and Angela Ray Veguilla.
A devoted member of St. Luke Baptist Church until his illness prevented regular attendance, Sylvester's faith remained steadfast throughout his life. His favorite scripture was Psalm 121, a passage that reflected his unwavering trust in God. He also cherished the hymn, "Use Me Lord."
Sylvester found great joy in spending time with his wife, especially cooking alongside her in the kitchen. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed the fellowship and challenge of the game. He was also a proud member of the 33rd Degree of Freemasonry.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted wife, Audrey L. Ray; three sons, Sylvester Ray, Jr., Kevin (Ann) Ray, and Billy Ray, all of Houma, Louisiana; one daughter, Angela R. Veguilla of Columbia, Maryland; one sister, Nettie Trahan; a devoted niece, Sonyna Johnson of Houma, Louisiana; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; grandchildren, Shelton Ray, Steven Ray, Prince Ray, Jeremiah Ray, Johnny Ray, Omica Ray, Lakeisha Ray Williams, and Billy Ray Jr., Aaron Ray and Ismael Veguilla a host of great-grandchildren; nieces nephews, relatives and friends.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Leola H. Ray, Sr.; his parents-in-law, James and Amanda G. Lewis; one son, Johnny J. Ray; grandchildren, Sylvester Ray III, Johnathan Ray, and Angela C. Ray; great granddaughter Dalanie Williams; brothers, Clarence Ray, Thomas Ray, Leonard Ray, and James Ray; and sisters, Bertha Johnson, Josephine McGuire, Gladys Short, Marion Mitchell, and Classie Navy.
Sylvester will be remembered for his love, unwavering faith, support of his family, strong work ethic, and kind spirit. His legacy of devotion to God and family will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.

Visitation will be held at St Luke Baptist Church, 3577 Bayou Black Dr, Houma, LA 70360, US, on June 2, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:45 am, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am.
Internment immediately following service Mt Pilgrim Baptist Church Cemetery, 4928 N Bayou Black Dr, Gibson, LA 70356, on June 2, 2026.
