

Born and raised in Gibson, Louisiana, Toni received her education at Southdown High School. She later discovered her calling in the kitchen, where her natural gift for seasoning and flavor made her a beloved cook. Toni never needed a recipe or measuring cup—her intuition, creativity, and love guided every dish she prepared.
On December 11, 1971, she united in marriage with the love of her life, Gerald Stewart, Sr. Together they built a blended family rooted in faith, strength, and devotion. Their union remained a source of joy until his passing.
Toni was a devoted member of Triumph Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the Deaconess Board for many years. She was also a proud member of the 12 Varieties. Her poise, strength, generosity, and unwavering faith touched those who knew her.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: sons John Ward, Sr. of Houma, LA, and Gerald Stewart, Jr. of Houston, TX; daughters Versettiel Williams of Thibodaux, LA, and Lora Singleton of Tallahassee, FL; and step‑daughter Darlene Singleton. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; eleven great‑grandchildren; one brother, Sterling Short (Joan) of Houma, LA; and two sisters, Rose Waters of Gibson, LA, and Lillie Williams (Sidney) of Dularge, LA. Godchildren, Randy Chapman and Janelle Short and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Toni is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Stewart, Sr.; her parents, Clarence and Leola Short; seven brothers, Clarence Short, Jr., Rennorh Short, Sr., Lee Andrew Short, Leroy Short, John Neal Short, Chester Short, and Bernard Short; three sisters, Cedonia Chapman, Lucille Sneeze, and Yvonne Boykin; her son‑in‑law, Bruce Williams, Sr.; and step‑daughter, Lupa Singleton.
Toni will be remembered for her warm spirit, her unmatched cooking, her devotion to her church, and the deep love she held for her family. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Mt Pilgrim Baptist Church, located at 4928 N Bayou Black Dr, Gibson, LA 70356.
Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 pm.
The burial will occur at Triumph Baptist Church Cemetery, 6313 Bayou Black Dr, Gibson, LA 70356.
