William Charlie Campbell Sr.

We celebrate the life of William C. Campbell, Sr., lovingly known as “Captain Bill.” A devoted husband,father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor, and man of God, he touched countless lives with his kindness, faith, and steady leadership.

Born October 5, 1946, in Lockport, Louisiana, William was the son of Lillian Picou Williams and Charlie Campbell, and was guided by his stepfather, Willie Williams. He accepted Christ early and was baptized at Israelite Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong walk of faith.or 52 years, William shared a loving and devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Albertha Campbell.

Together they built a strong family foundation and raised four sons: Anthony “Tonniese” Poindexter, Pastor Timothy “Angela” Campbell, Master Sergeant William “Andrea Johnson" Campbell Jr. and Dr.John “LaCest” Campbell. Their family grew to include 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He also held a special place in his heart for his godchildren, Rosalie Willis, Tarolyn Gray, and Kitridge Preston Jr. William proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Sergeant and spent nearly three decades with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, where he became affectionately known as “Captain Bill.” His faith guided him as a dedicated Deacon and later Senior Deacon of Israelite Baptist Church.

A man who embraced life wholeheartedly, William enjoyed racing sports cars with his sons—occasionally “blowing an engine or two” along the way.

He loved singing with the Raceland Male Chorus, cheering on the New Orleans Saints, repairing bicycles for neighborhood children, and preparing his famous meals of pork roast, white beans, and potato salad. His warm smile, generous spirit, and willingness to help others made everyone feel welcomed and valued. He leaves cherished memories with his wife, sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his brother Dewight “Maria” Campbell, 15 sisters-in-law and 8 brothers-in-law, his godchildren, and a host of relatives, friends, and church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, in-laws Isaac and Mary Preston, brothers Henry (Babe) and Charlie (Tupound), Aunt Josephine (Aunt Pudding), Mama Shine, Henry Williams, and his godchild Juanita Preston. William’s legacy lives not only in his titles—Sergeant, Captain, Deacon—but in the love, wisdom, and strength he poured into everyone he met.
