Born to Enayet and Aklima in Ramghati, Birbhum, West Bengal, India, young Abdus Satter possessed a special brilliance that would not only bestow upon him the rare gift of a formal education, but eventually land him far from his small village at top universities abroad. Dr. Satter earned his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, PE and MS degrees in Petroleum Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, and PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Satter became a renowned expert in reservoir engineering and operations, creating solutions for reservoir management projects in Brazil, Cameroon, Denmark, Indonesia, Nigeria, Trinidad, Venezuela, the UK and throughout the US. In 1998, he retired from Texaco after 30 years of service and having earned numerous patents along the way, after which he formed Satter and Associates to continue providing engineering consulting, teaching and training services throughout the world. Dr. Satter taught at the University of Western Ontario and Ahsanullah Engineering College in Bangladesh. He authored or co-author four technical books which universities across the U.S. have used to teach over a generation of petroleum engineering students: Practical and Enhanced Reservoir Engineering: Assisted with Simulation Software (2008); Computer-Assisted Reservoir Management (2000); Integrated Water Flood Asset Management (1998); and Integrated Petroleum Reservoir Management (1994). A distinguished lecturer on Integrated Reservoir Management for the Society of Professional Engineers (SPE), Dr. Satter also was a life member of SPE and a Legion of Honor inductee.
Dr. Abdus Satter passed away peacefully at his home in Katy, Texas. A beloved husband and father, Dr. Satter is survived by his devoted wife, Yolanda Villarreal Satter, his three children, Muneer A. Satter and his wife, Kristen Haylor Hertel of Winnetka, IL, R. Shereen Fuqua and her husband, Jeffrey S. Fuqua of Atlanta, GA, and Rabi Satter of Seattle, WA, as well as Yolanda’s children, Christy Marroquin and her husband, Jason Garcia, and Elizabeth Marroquin. He was also a wonderful grandfather to Tess, Grace, Anna, Elise, Kate, Kat, and Alma. Dr. Satter touched the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, honesty, loyalty, love and wisdom, and his warm smile and engaging laugh will live on in our hearts.
