

On December 29, 1932, ABEL WHITAKER began his earthly journey in Holly, Louisiana. He was born to the late Issac Whitaker, Jr. and Carlee Green Whitaker. The late Statney Whitaker, cousin, Mary Carroll Whitaker and Jessie Sabbath Whitaker raised Abel as their son, with their children, until he became a young man and relocated to Houston, Texas in 1949.
A CHRISTIAN MAN
Abel accepted Christ at the St. Mark Baptist Church in Holly, Louisiana, under the leadership of the late Reverend S. M. Price. His kind and gentle demeanor was demonstrated daily throughout his life.
A FAMILY MAN
Abel married Bertha Green and they were blessed with two children, Bertha Bell and Jimmy Dean. He later married Thelma Terrell Williams. To this union there were no children. Abel worked in the private and commercial sectors of the Transportation Trucking Industry. He owned his rig and worked as an independent for a while, subcontracting his services out to different companies. Abel often expressed how much he enjoyed the freedom of the trucking industry. He spoke about a peace he felt as he sat up high in the cabin of his truck. Abel appreciated the view of seeing the sunrise or sunset over different cities and landscapes. During his trucking days, he really enjoyed his CB radio. Abel enjoyed life spending time with family, loved ones and friends. He was known to be an honest, hard-working man. Among many other things, Abel loved reading his Holy Bible as well as his collection of health books based on a holistic approach to life.
EARTHLY DEPARTURE
Abel completed his life's journey on Tuesday morning, January 9, 2018, in Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Bertha Bell Whitaker; sister, Ruthie D. Whitaker-Bates; brother, Foster “Jig” Perkins, Jr.; and eight cousins he called his brothers and sisters.
CHERISHED MEMORIES
Abel’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his loving son, Jimmy D. Whitaker (Lisa Mathews) Sugar Land, Texas; two uncles: Green Whitaker, Sr. and Dave Whitaker, both of Shreveport, Louisiana, numerous special nieces and nephews, and other close relatives and friends.
