Agnes Nickerson Jones was the second of three children born to the parents of Cornell and Lillian Nickerson on September 19, 1941, in Coldspring, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Sunlight Baptist Church under the leadership of the late, Dr. A. B. Boylan. Agnes attended Kashmere High School where she was a part of the first graduating class of 1958. While attending Kashmere, she excelled and was able to graduate by the age of sixteen.
Agnes went on to attend Prairie View A & M University. It was there she earned her bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in counseling. Agnes was a member of The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Her local chapter Delta Chi is where she served as secretary and on many other committees.
Agnes began her career teaching in Houston ISD. She taught at several elementary schools as a fourth and fifth grade teacher. After teaching for many years, she later became a school counselor. Agnes always had a deep love for working with children. She served 35 years with Houston ISD before retiring to take care of her mother.
In 1981, Agnes married the late Rev. Edward A. Jones. They were united in hold matrimony for 33 years. After uniting, God blessed them with two beautiful children, Eric and Brittany. Agnes enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. However, her true passion was supporting her husband as the First Lady of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church. She loved working for the Lord. Agnes enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching bible study, and being a motivational speaker for God.
Agnes departed this life on February 13, 2024. She was preceded in death by her loving parents (Cornell and Lillian Nickerson), husband (Rev. Edward A. Jones), son (Eric Jones), and sister (Lois Tilmon).
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter (Brittany Jones), brother (Cornell Nickerson Jr.), grandson (Cornell Harrison), granddaughter (Paris Cofield), niece (Katrina Tilmon) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, and friends who loved her dearly.
A visitation for Agnes will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Sunlight Baptist Church, 6319 Laura Koppe Rd, Houston, TX 77016. A home-going celebration will occur Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, 6319 Laura Koppe Rd, Houston, TX 77016. A committal service will occur Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Brookside Funeral Home & Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers are Kevin Scott, Cornell Harrison, Jeffery Jackson, Don Sweat Jr., Daniel Sweat, Christian Nickerson, Cornell Nickerson Sr., Don Sweat Sr., Arthur Jones, Dr. Albert Lemons, Herbert Kelly and Robert Love.
