A.J. Shepherd, affectionately known to family and friends as “AJ,” entered eternal rest after a life marked by love, friendship, hard work, and devotion to family.
Born on October 25, 1958, in Houston, Texas, AJ was the fourth of seven children born to A.J. Sr. and Jewel Arline Shepherd. He was baptized at an early age where his spiritual foundation was established.
AJ was a proud graduate of Kashmere High School, Class of 1977. Possessing a strong entrepreneurial spirit and determination, he became the owner and operator of Houston Area Courier Inc. and Shepwood Inc., businesses he successfully managed for more than
fifteen years. His work as a courier gave him an unmatched knowledge of Houston’s streets and neighborhoods. He often entertained family and friends with stories from the road and his “humorous” observations of fellow drivers. He concluded his work
career as a courier with ProPath Inc.
Known for his fun-loving personality, AJ truly never met a stranger. He had a remarkable gift for making instant connections with people and remembering the details that made each friendship special. Whether gathered around a barbecue pit, sharing stories with family and friends, or enjoying time outdoors, AJ’s presence brought laughter and a sense of belonging to those around him.
One of AJ’s greatest passions was fishing, a skill he learned from his mother. He cherished every opportunity to cast a line and spend time on the water. His love for the sport was contagious, and he proudly taught many family members and friends how to fish, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
On August 18, 1986, AJ married the love of his life, Cheryl Nowlin. Together they built a loving home and shared a beautiful life. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Ariel and Crystal Shepherd, who became the pride and joy of his life. He cherished every
moment spent with his family and took great pride in their accomplishments.
AJ’s legacy of kindness, friendship, humor, and unwavering love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Cheryl; his beloved daughters, Ariel Shepherd and Crystal Shepherd; his sister, Deborah
Shepherd; his brother, Willie C. Shepherd; a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family members, and dear friends. He also leaves behind special friends Lawrence Louis,Simeon GoKool, and Michael Lane whose friendship meant so much throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. Shepherd Sr. and Jewel Arline Shepherd, and his siblings Carl Shepherd Sr, Brenda Ellison, Lois Shepherd Saad, and Lynette Mayes.
Though AJ’s earthly journey has ended, the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the love he shared will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
