Alan Abraham Baker

Alan Abraham “Al” Baker, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and respected leader in the energy industry, passed away peacefully at his home in Sugar Land, Texas on Saturday, the 3rd of May 2025. He was 93 years of age.

Born on the 12th of February 1932, to Millard “Pete” Baker and Helen Perkins, Alan was raised in Duncan Falls, Ohio with his older sister, Joan. He spent his entire childhood in Duncan Falls where he displayed an extraordinary talent for sports, academics, and leadership. Whether it was playing baseball, basketball or football for the Philo Electrics or as an officer in student council, Alan wasn’t just a participant-he was a true leader. His natural athleticism, determination and sportsmanship made him a respected teammate on and off the field.

Duncan Falls is also where he fell in love with a girl from the other side of the tracks in Philo named Betty Ann Fitz. That high school sweetheart would become his wife who would stand by his side while he continued his academic and athletic journey at Marietta College and later would travel the world with him while he worked in the oil business with Halliburton.

Alan's remarkable life was marked by unwavering dedication to both his family and his profession. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, and embarked on a distinguished career that spanned over four decades at The Halliburton Company. He began his tenure in 1954 as a field engineer and rose through the ranks to become one of the most influential figures in the company. His roles included Manager of the Pittsburgh Division, Vice President of Domestic Operations, Senior Vice President of U.S. and Far East Operations, Senior Vice President of International Operations and President/CEO.

From 1985 to 1987, he served as President of the Vann Systems Division and from 1987 to 1989, he held the position of President & CEO of Halliburton Services while also serving on the Executive Committee of the Halliburton Company. Alan went on to become President of Halliburton Energy Services Group from 1989 to 1992, and later Chairman & CEO. He served as Chairman of Halliburton Energy Services from 1993 onward, leading with integrity and vision far beyond his official retirement from Halliburton in 1995.

No matter what title Alan held, he never let it define how he treated others. To him, people always came first. He had a remarkable gift for making others feel seen and valued, not just by remembering their names but by taking the time to learn their stories.

Outside his professional achievements, Alan gave generously of his time to numerous organizations. He was active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association. A registered professional engineer in five states, he also contributed to the American Petroleum Institute and the National Ocean Industries Association while also serving on numerous boards of directors. Alan’s exceptional leadership was recognized with the Don E. Waggoner/Butch Griffin Award in 1993, and he was inducted into the Ohio Oil & Gas Association Hall of Fame in 1994. He was appointed to the Oklahoma Board of Regents for Higher Education by the governor of Oklahoma in 1987 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 1999 from Marietta College.

He served as a Trustee and Trustee Emeritus of Marietta College and was inducted into the inaugural class of the Petroleum Engineering and Geology Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2007, he was honored with induction into the Franklin Local School District Alumni Wall of Honor in Philo, Ohio.

Above all, Alan was a family man. He adored his wife of seventy-five years, Betty Ann, and was proud of the life he built with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To know Alan was to know how much his family meant to him and how much he meant to them in return. Alan’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the enduring impact of his contributions to the energy industry around the world.

Alan is survived by his two children, son, Mark and wife Paula, and daughter, Roxanne (Baker) Andersen and husband John; his grandchildren, Regan (Baker) Nabors and husband Clint, Jonathan Andersen, and Erica (Andersen) Comfort and husband Dave; and two great-grandchildren, Baker Nabors, and Betty Comfort. He is also survived by numerous extended family members.

Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann; his parents, Pete and Helen Baker; and sister, Joan Post.

Alan’s family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Luz, Anne, Noemi, and Liliana who provided compassionate support and dedicated care to Alan and Betty Ann during the later stages of their life. They are and will forever be cherished members of the family.

Friends are cordially invited with the family to celebrate Alan’s life from four o’clock in the afternoon until six o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 24th of July, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
