

Alberta Alfred passed away peacefully on August 11, 2023. She began her life on January 17, 1937. Her parents were Ruston and Leona Calligan. She was born in Whiteville, Louisiana. Alberta attended Whiteville High School and was known as one of the best basketball players on the team. After she graduated from high school she married Castain Alfred, Sr.
They moved to Houston after Castain served his tour of duty in the United States Marines. The couple was married for 65 yrs. and there were six beautiful children born to this union. Alberta and her family attended Morning Star Baptist Church for 60 yrs. Alberta later moved her membership to Providence Missionary Baptist Church under the tutelage of Pastor Jerry Wade, Sr. She had known Pastor Wade for many years and enjoyed his teaching and singing. When she was no longer able to attend church, Pastor Wade would always find time to visit her. She always smiled when he walked into the room. She enjoyed his visits so much. Alberta would always tell Pastor Wade to take care of himself.
Alberta enjoyed having her family around. She loved cooking and she was a great cook. She especially enjoyed celebrating Christmas at her home. Alberta’s home was always open to everyone. You always felt welcome. Alberta always had Good Friday crawfish boil, at her home.
She loved being around people and people loved being around her. She was most certainly going to make you laugh. She loved going out to eat, playing cards and playing dominos. She enjoyed cheering for her hometown teams, Houston Rockets and Houston Texans. Her greatest joy was with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Alberta was preceded in death by her parents Ruston and Leona Calligan, husband Castain Alfred, Sr, daughter Leona Franklin, grandson Joshua Rodney, brothers Eless Calligan, Sam Calligan, Beo Calligan, Leo Calligan, sisters Leanna Myles, Catherine Stevens and Shirley Calligan-DeClues.
Alberta leaves to cherish her memories; 5 children; Castain Alfred, Jr (Sharon), Sheila Barnes (Dwayne), Kathy Rodney (Willie), Carey (Edie), Jennifer (Phil). Her grandchildren; Tiffany, Mytasha, Lisa, Castain III, Chemeckia, Dwayne, Candice, Fabian, Cayla, Carey II, Malik, Tyler, Corey, Brice and Korrigen. Alberta had 9 great grandchildren. 2 God children; Roy Merritt (Kamie) and Carol Alfred-Jackson (Harold). She leaves behind 1 lovely sister Lorena Charles. Alberta leaves behind a special friend that she loved as a daughter Marie Pitre. She leaves a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
