

Albertine Burick Schaffer was born in Ghent, Belgium, on Septeber 23, 1942 in the midst of World War II. To parents of Rene’ and Marie-Jose’ Burick. Albertine was the oldest of 4 children, she had two brothers and one sister. When she was a very young girl her father was placed in a concentration camp only to escape one year later to be reunited with his family. She attended Catholic school and later found she was gifted as a seamstress. She began making custom clothing for others and later sewed all the clothing for her family.
At the age of 18 she met John Schaffer who was an Airman Second class stationed in Northern France. John visited Brussels where they met and quickly fell in love. They married and moved to France and later Belgium where they had their first two children Sherry and Robert. John was then ordered back to the US. Soon after with a one0year-old and a 6-week-old baby, Albertine was leaving her family and all she knew behind. Traveling to America knowing very little English to join her husband to start their new life. She would arrive in North Carolina where their third child Jaqueline was born. Being in the military they were uprooted to many different states in the US. She spent the remainder of her life in the US while always keeping Belgium clos to her heart.
Albertine worked very hard to become an American citizen in 1991. Throughout the years her brother and sister visited several times in the US. Albertine worked very hard for her family and was always present in their lives. During her life she worked at Saybrook Fabrics in the Galleria area creating custom Vogue designs for the store. Albertine also worked in management at Weingarten’s grocery for many years. After the closing of Weingarten’s she worked and then retired with HEB.
Albertine was not only a wonderful mother but also an amazing grandma, she had 6 grandchildren. It was important to her that she found the time to be involved in each one of their lives. For several years she was ill with lung disease, but that did not stop her because she was a fighter and lived life to the fullest! She continued to enjoy her children and grandchildren in spite of her illness.
She is deeply missed by all those who loved her. Her precious memory will be cherished by her brother Andre’ Burick, Rosette Van Hauwaert her sister, brother Raoul Burick. Brother-in-law Robert Van Hauwaert, sister-in-law Patricia Burick. Sherry Sims, daughter. Robert Schaffer, son. Jacqueline Schaffer, daughter. Son-in-law Lee Sims. Grandchildren, Dylan Schaffwer, Ashley Sims, Stephanie Sims, Zachary Schaffer. Grandchildren Josh and Gerad Schaffer welcomed their grandmother in Heaven. Nephew Steve Burick, Christopher Burick. Nieces, Sandra Van Hauwaert, Stephanie Burick’ Herpoel, Cindy Vanhauwen. Survived by many more family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Brookside Funeral Home at 13747 Highway 69, Houston, Texas 77039. Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Viewing will be held at 9:30 AM with service following at 10 AM.
