

He was born on the 14th of January 1917 in New Orleans. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a navigation officer in a B-26 Bomber Group and a B-25 Squadron in the European theater. He was injured in an air accident in 1943, and received the Battle Star. Alex graduated from Louisiana State University in 1949, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society, and Phi Mu Epsilon, the National Mathematics Honorary Society.
Alex began his career with Esso in Baton Rouge. He moved to Houston when Esso merged with Humble and retired from the company now known as Exxon in 1983. He was a registered professional engineer in Louisiana and Texas. He was president of the World Trade Club of Houston, 1965-1967, director of the World Trade Association, 1965-1966, and director of the Propeller Club of the U. S., 1967-1968. He was a member of the International Business Committee of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, 1964-1968. He married Barbara Hinds Bartlett in 1960.
Alex was preceded in death by his beloved brother, John, whom he always called “Brother,” and his step-daughter Barbara Bartlett Gresham. He is survived by his wife and two of her children, Vicki Bartlett Chamberlain (Paul) and James Bartlett; and two step-grandchildren, Jessica and David Bartlett. Other survivors include “Brother’s” six children, Pam Kelly (Joe), Jan Forster (Wayne), Carol Finney, Doris Finney, Paul Finney (Cynthia) and Danielle Baker (David) and their children, Monica Ellegood, Elise Judkins (Jeremiah and their son Alexander), Kathleen O’Neil (Dan Cameron), Robin O’Neil, Catalina Finney, Paul Sebastian Finney, Ellyn Baker, Delmar Baker IV, John Finney Baker and Carolyn Baker.
Alex loved his family and his Louisiana heritage. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, son and uncle. He loved his church and served for many years as an usher at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Alex lived his life with dignity and charm and a wry sense of humor. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word.
The family gathered for a private memorial mass last week on Friday, the 20th of May, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Houston.
