Born on a farm in La Porte, Indiana, he was the first of five children. They all worked hard on the farm raising chickens, pigs, milk cows, and vegetables. After graduating from La Porte High School, Al joined the Air Force and was stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador. He was promoted to Sergeant during his stay and decided to start a Jazz band to entertain the men. Al was a great trumpet player and had such a great time and making most of the frigid temperatures up there. Upon his return to Lowry Air Force base in Denver, he met the love of his life Neva, in 1953. They were married for 67 years until her passing in 2019. Together, they had 2 daughters, Dana and Jana and their son Eric who lived 6 months. Al had several different job experiences before getting into the Oil and Gas business. He was the Personnel Director of Inexco Oil Company for many years. He then owned and opened 3 dirt yards in the Houston area called “1960 Soil Center”. Al would say, “He had gone from oil to soil!”
Al was so proud of his family. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and always looked forward to hearing about their lives and seeing them. He loved going to his grandson’s sport activities. Christopher, his oldest grandson, worked for him at the dirt yard for 3 summers during his teenage years, as well as Bill and Steve, during their high school summers.
Al was a God loving man and loved ushering in the church. He loved working in the yard and was the best dancer!
Al never met a stranger and believed: Treat others as YOU would want to be treated and always finish what you’ve started. He certainly practiced what he preached…
He is survived by his siblings, Dorothy, Julius (Inky), and Janice. Daughters Dana Schoof McGuirk and husband Bruce, Jana Schoof Ray and husband Doug. Grandchildren: Christopher McGuirk and wife Jennifer and their 3 children, Matthew McGuirk and wife Brittany and their 4 children, Bill Ray, Steve Ray, and wife Alyson and their 3 children and Kim Ray Buford and husband Trent and their 2 daughters.
He is preceded in death by his wife Neva Rae, his parents, Alfred and Annabelle, his sister Darlene, son Eric, and great grandson, Madden Matthew.
Al will be truly missed. He taught his family the importance of family and church, the lust for life, and how truly our blessings should never be taken for granted. Many thanks to daughter Jana for being their everyday during his time at Gleannloch Village. She made sure he was well taken care of and Al was surely grateful for that.
Many thanks to the caring people at Gleannloch Village for their kindness, concern, and care that he had the last 3 years of his life.
