

Alge Ross James, Jr., 93, of Crockett, TX, left us to be with his Lord on June 18, 2013. He was born on February 16, 1920, at Hillendahl Station, TX, to Alge Ross James, Sr., and Eva Josephine (Spinks) James. On June 7, 1941, he married Berniece Christine Vanderburg at Crosstimbers Baptist Church in Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his sisters, Bessie Novella (Owen) Owens, Ethel Irene (John) Buchanan, and Edith Fannie (Johnnie) McFarlan. He is survived his children Faye Irene (Jim) Cannon, Joseph Carl (Shirley) James, and Bradley Ray (Diane) James; grandchildren James Cannon, Jr., Delinda Cannon, Christy Yeats, Bradley James, and Matthew James. He also has great-grandchildren: Michelle Ferrell, Jamie Cannon, Mandy Ferrell, Brittney Knoop, Lacy Gray, Kylee Shed, Sean James, Cyerra James, Marissa James, and one great-great granddaughter, Zoey Melder along with several nieces and nephews. Raymond Summy and Ross enjoyed a special bond and adopted each other as grandson and grandfather.
Ross grew up in Houston and attended Stonewall Jackson Jr. High. He served in the army during World War II. He worked at Cook Heat Treating Co. for 41 years and then at Thornhill Craver for 5 more years. After Ross retired, he and Berniece moved to Goodrich, TX, and later to Crockett, TX.
In 1955, Ross became a Free Mason as a member of the Anson Jones Masonic Lodge where he studied and became a Master Mason. Ross was also a Worthy Patron of the Magnolia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a founding member of the Torchlight Community Church in Crockett where he spent many days working with the staff and children at the school. Ross loved gardening, woodwork, and making memories with his family. Together, Ross and Berniece loved and were devoted to each other for 70+ years.
