Alice’s L I F E

Alice Faye Lewis, affectionately known as “Mattie”, was born March 27, 1944, to Bessie Mae Webb in Haynesville, Louisiana. With J.W. Webb, she was relocated to Houston, Texas, in the Kashmere Garden Community until his last days. J.W. Webb became the center of Alice’s life and held a very special place in her heart.

Alice graduated from the old Kashmere High School, Class of 1962. She went on to further her education at Prairie View A&M University where she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing. Alice began her career at St. Elizabeth Hospital where she served faithfully for many years until its closure. She later continued her calling at Twelve Oaks Hospital for more than 30 years, retiring in 2005 due to health challenges. She was loved by many doctors, staff, and patients, and was highly respected as a dedicated professional who was a true pillar of the community.

Alice was devoted to her faith. She accepted Jesus Christ at a young age and rededicated her life to Christ later at Kashmere Gardens Missionary Baptist Church. She attended and supported various churches throughout the Houston area, remaining steadfast in her commitment to God.

Alice’s greatest earthly blessing came when she met the love of her life, Rogers Lewis. Already a devoted mother of three, she and Rogers joined their lives in marriage and built a home filled with love, strength, and faith. They were inseparable—sharing a deep bond, enjoying traveling, cooking, and participating in social club activities together. Above all, their greatest joy was found in being devoted grandparents, cherishing every moment spent with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Mae Webb and step-father, J.W. Webb; her father, Claimon Watts, Sr.; step-mother, Dorothy Watts; brothers, Derrick Webb, Douglas Watts and Kenneth Watts; sisters, Brenda Watts, Carletta Watts, Donna Watts and Alice Watts; and grandchild, Aja Strange.

She leaves to cherish her memory; her husband, Rogers Lewis; her children, Roddrick Webb (Tasha), Nichelle Webb (Lawrence Talbert), Bridgett Gilder (Robert Brown) and Dwayne Jones; siblings, Inez Watts, Myra Watts, Violet Watts, Marsha Watts-Kirkland, Claimon R. Watts, Jr., Steve Watts, Charles Watts of Kansas City, Missouri, Margie Revels, Bobbie Ann Webb, Angela King (James King), Shalana Wolf (Allen Wolf), Christine Webb and Darrell Webb of Houston Texas; in-laws, Paula (William), Edna, Sandra, Edwina, Karen, Johnell (Annie Mae), and Freddie; sister-in-law, Stonja; as well as 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

A visitation for Alice will be held Friday, August 22, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Paradise Funeral Home, Inc, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at Kashmere Gardens Missionary Baptist Church, 4302 Cavalcade St, Houston, TX 77026. A celebration of life will immediately follow from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The committal service will held Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Paradise Cemetery North, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088.
