12. Born in 1925 in Edinburg,Texas the youngest of five children, Alma graduated from TWU
with a degree in education, moved to Houston in 1948 and married Frank Augustus
Tammariello. They were married for 49 years until his passing in 1996. Alma was a kindergarten
teacher for forty years in the HISD. She had the privilege of teaching thousands of children first
at Gregg elementary and for many years at Red elementary. Her gift for education touched the
lives of many who recall her to this day. In fact she was often recognized and remembered in
the community by her former students as the years went by. In some cases she taught children
and years later the children of those students as well.
She is survived by her three children, Frank Joel, Ron, and Celeste and the late Carol Lenar.
She was their loving mother and guiding light for her lifetime.
Alma was a ball of energy, always on the move, and excited to make the most of everyday even
into her eighties, celebrating her ninetieth only last November.
After retirement she traveled to Europe, visiting Spain, Italy and Switzerland and in the US from
New England to Hawaii and enjoyed her retirement with her husband. She was fond of
California and visited many times to see her sons Frank and Ron and his wife Jessica and their
two sons Jackson and Lucas, her grandsons. She was especially proud of her bright grandsons
and their outstanding academic achievement.
After her husband Frank passed in 1996 she continued to enjoy a full life of friends and family,
spirited exercise, social activities, and gardening.
She told it like it is, never thought of her self as old and that’s what kept her young at heart. Her
energy and optimism inspired her children and grandchildren to keep reaching for success in all
their artistic endeavors.
