Alton Berry Jr., 87, of Houston, Texas, entered his sunset on Monday, February 3, 2025. He was born on March 2, 1937, in Harris County, Texas, to the late Alton and Mary Berry.
Alton was a proud graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School in 1957, where he laid the foundation for his passion in music. He furthered his education at Texas Southern University, majoring in music.
From a young age, Alton showed a natural talent for music, learning to play the slide trombone at just 15 years old. Along with his brother Leslie, he also formed a gospel band at Pleasant Grove Church under the leadership of the late Reverend McCardale.
A man of deep faith, Alton accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized under the guidance of the late Reverend E.L. Fields. In 2023, he united with New Light Christian Center under the leadership of Pastor I.V. Hilliard. Alton’s spiritual walk was always enriched by prayer, especially the time he spent praying with his sister, Gloria.
Alton was a devoted family man. He united in Holy Matrimony with the late Betty Williams Berry, and together they raised three children: Janet Berry, Glenn Berry Sr., and Carlton Berry. He was a proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, and he cherished his family deeply.
Beyond his musical and spiritual pursuits, Alton had a successful career with the Harris County Flood Control District, where he worked as a Superintendent and Supervisor from 1966 to 1992. After 27 years of dedicated service, he retired and went on to become the CEO of Berry’s Moonwalks, a business he founded and operated with pride.
Alton was also a passionate sports fan, an avid supporter of the Houston Texans, Rockets, and Astros. He was especially fond of gospel music and would often sing along with his favorite artist, Rance Allen. Alton’s constant companion throughout his later years was his beloved dog, Brownie, whom he adored.
Alton is survived by his daughters, Janet Berry Houston and April Berry of Houston, Texas; sons, Glenn Berry Sr. of Houston, Texas, and Carlton Berry (Monica) of Houston, Texas; and sister, Gloria Saulter; great aunt, Joella Fields.
