Amelia Gonzalez Benavente, 89, of Spring, left this world a better place when she departed this life on September 25, 2020 at home surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was proud of her ethnic heritage, which was Jewish, Spanish, and Mexican. She throughout her life held close ties with both Spain and Mexico.
She was born to her parents, Pablo Gonzalez and Maria Del Pila Gonzalez on October 5, 1930 in Tampico, Mexico. Her early life and education occurred in a boarding school in Spain. She left Mexico in 1947 at the age of 17 and immigrated to the United States, arriving in Houston, Texas, where she worked. She then moved to Chicago where she met her ex-husband and had Michael and Myra. Amelia and her children moved to Texas in 1968 where they established a family and home.
Always the one who was concerned about others and their well-being, she took those skills and applied them to her professional life as well. She completed her education as a Registered Nurse (RN) and decided that her help, love, and caring nature was best spent providing private duty for others. She worked for one family for over 19 years, daily giving attention and specialized care to her charges.
She soon found herself the doting and proud mother of Michael and Myra. As a mother, she was tough and had strong expectations of her children, but she also was loving, supportive, and nurturing to them in all they sought to accomplish. Her greatest role ever though was being a grandmother to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her beautiful smile, her words of encouragement, and her heart of love not only made her family a family, but it kept her family a family.
She has left a legacy of family that includes her children, Michael Benavente and his life partner Lynn Hammer, as well as her daughter, Myra Benavente. Amelia’s cherished grandchildren include, Kimberly, Shawn, Christopher, Elizabeth, Christina, and Christian. During her journey of the last few days and weeks, she routinely depended upon her precious Christian, who was completely devoted to meeting her every need.
Her great-grandchildren, whom she adored, include, Ryan, Scott, Michael, Andrew, Aiden, Max, Caiden, Julian, Kaleb, Payton, Dalton, and her beloved great-grand fur baby “Rocky”. She also had a very favorite niece, Yvonne, that was very much like a daughter to her as well.
Amelia was preceded in death by her dear parents, Pablo and Maria, as well as her sisters in Mexico.
The family has planned a Celebration of Life that will include both a joyful remembrance of her life, including her laughter, her care, and her love, as well as parts of Liturgy that express her deeply personal and private faith in God. The Celebration of Life will occur on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 in the Chapel of American Heritage Funeral Home, beginning at three o’clock in the afternoon. Immediately following the Celebration of Life, a Committal Service will be held under the Porto cohe’re at American Heritage Funeral Home, where a dove release will occur, calling to mind her spirit being set free and her love engulfing the world.
